I had recently started revisting the Mel Lewis series! The guy who posted them all has recently revised his site, and now parts 5-7 are available -albeit unsequenced. I may go through and try to name the files so I can listen to them, will share if I do.

Among Daves many accomplishments is the move to the smaller bass drum. In a time when guys were using 24 and larger bass drums, Tough worked with Gretch to make the first small.

I remember reading about Dave Tough in Milton Mezzrow's autobiography, Really the Blues. Sartorial god as well as one of the best drummers of the middle 20th century. View attachment 435044
Bruh!
His shirt is two sizes too big, his collar stays are missing, and judging by that pocket it's not even really a dress shirt. Folks just "dressed up" more often then.

I like this thread because a) I like Dave Tough and b) I just realized that Gretsch's Chicago office was in the same building as Frank's Drum Shop.
