I’ve been following Dixon and Greg Bissonette for a while, and they seem to be turning out some really good gear. I know a lot of us are used to Dixon being low quality products, but they seem to be knocking it out the park with their new stuff.

Edit: website added

thanks @dsop

I’ve seen some really cool looking snares online and judging by the audio samples they sound great.

They just had their US point man on the Drum History Podcast a couple months ago. I agree, they seem to be making some good looking stuff now but it's gonna take some time to change the connotation of the brand name. Unless there is a major cost advantage buying a kit from them, how many people are going to ditch their DW, Pearl, Mapex, and so on kits to get their hands on a Dixon?

To be fair though, Mapex was in the same situation not too long ago.

Jim Uding leads the Dixon brand now, and he’s a real stand-up guy. I used to be a regular customer of his Drum Headquarters shop in St. Louis (now closed). It seems Dixon is working to build a reputation for quality gear, while also making all-inclusive kits for the beginner. It’s not an easy task, but some of their new stuff is pretty attractive.

A local drum shop carries the Dixon brand and their hardware seems not bad.

Great to see all the love and appreciation for this emerging brand. If I were in the market for a new kit, I’d buy a Dixon kit. I’ve seen and heard their drums up close and personal many times and they are a legit high end drum company. And Jim Uding and the people behind the company are equally high quality people.

Full disclosure: I did some consulting for Dixon shortly after leaving Zildjian and am happy for their growth and success in a very crowded market. Gregg Bissonette has done a lot for them and now they have Stan Lynch on their artist roster. If you haven’t checked them out you should.

IMO it’s still the same situation, even though they’re making some really nice stuff these days.
It's funny how our biases work. I've played some really great sounding Mapex kits that seem to be built very well, but I still don't have any interest in owning one.

Dixon probably has a tougher hill to climb than Mapex, though. Mostly because Dixon's positioning for years was low priced and entry level gear.

Just this past year I finally bought my first Mapex snare. And then I bought another one, and then another, and another, and now I have around 10 Mapex snares in my collection. And I'm not trying to brag, but for years I couldn't get over the name and associating it with low quality material. But when I looked into their setd, I noticed they really didn't have any big name endorsers. So I guess I'm not the only one who still Associates their name with lower quality.

Rogers is being made out of the same factory. (Pork Pie doing some of the work for the Covington and Cleveland series).

Hi Rikki, it's good to see you on here.

Yeah I was surprised when I saw on the Reliance website that they are making Rogers and Dixon. Reliance certainly makes quality products, so I would expect Dixon to be no different.
