I saw ONE vid on the Tube, a guy playing a 4X14 Dixon brass snare and it sounded terrific. Don't see them offered anywhere.

Really what got me looking at them more seriously was their direct drive pedal. This thing looks like a beast.

Halfway between the Quads and the Windy City...
actually the Mapex name goes way back to the 80's when the two partners wives came up with the name.. . One wife was a big fan of Maybelline products.. while the other wife was a big fan of Tampax products.. . so they decided to compromise and combine forces to create the Mapex name from the two favorite brands.
I thought Dumpy was back before I saw who posted this...

Me too. I feel that "Mapex" indicates that the drums are made of Maple wood. It would be the same as using the name "Birchex" for Birch, or "Popex" for Poplar, "Beechex" for Beech, or "Mahex" for Mahogany.
But something tells me that "Maple" wasn't the impetus for the name.
Now that I think about it, I have always assumed that "Mapex" derived from "maple." But it does also sound like an industrial solvent. Dixon, on the other hand, needs to sign Norman Reedus to an endorsement deal.

Me too. I refuse to buy anything Pearl, Yamaha or Tama. Go figure.
For some odd reason, I've never thought of Yamaha as a low-quality Japanese import from the 70s. I think it's because I knew guys with Yamaha dirt bikes that were really nice.

I had to check this out after you posted it. Interesting. Coil spring. I have not looked up pricing but the info on the Dixon site is certainly interesting.

Several Japanese companies have a very broad spectrum of products…Mitsubishi, Honda, Kawasaki, etc.

Pretty sure the other wife was a fan of Kotex, not Tampax. Otherwise they'd be called Mapax...

Hi Rikki, it's good to see you on here.

Yeah I was surprised when I saw on the Reliance website that they are making Rogers and Dixon. Reliance certainly makes quality products, so I would expect Dixon to be no different.

Reliance does excellent quality work, doing most of the good hardware in the drum business, under other labels, and working with Rogers,Pork Pie,Gretsch Reknown kits, and many others.I have a hammered steel snare drum from them, purple titanium plated, and it is a top shelf drum.I have seen Greg Bisonette playing Dixon's deep purple kit,and they sound great live. The Dixon line is very creative and innovative, and not the semi-pro stuff of years ago.I worked several years with Reliance and the Chen family, and their commitment to quality is second to none. They are the largest source of drum hardware in the world, doing components and/or complete hardware for many major pecussion manufactures under private labels. Some of the most famous hardware components are manufactured overseas, and labeled,Made In U.S.A, as long as a percentage of the work is done in the U.S.(if my 69 year old brain remembers correctly(which is a crapshoot..)Dixon is the name of Joseph Chen's grandmother, and Mapex was dreamed up bu Gabe Ireland at Kaman,as a combination of maple(MAP),and he most popular drums at the time,Exports.(EX) Map+Ex=Mapex.
