Do any of you regularly use a Super Sensitive?

Hey everybody.

Just curious to hear from those of you who use a SS regularly. What do you like about them. What kind of applications do they shine brightest in? Where would you use an SS over a Supra?

Used a B/O one throughout the entire 90's while playing in a popular Grateful Dead cover band. It did a great job being articulate for that kind of stuff which was needed. Dead drummer Billy Kreutzmann incidentally played a Rogers Dynasonic paired up with the several different kits he played over the years. Both snares are extremely sensitive as everyone knows.
The bottom hoop oxidation was from playing many outdoor gigs in shorts (South Florida) and sweat soaking that bottom hoop...Lol

I use them all the time! Regular gigs, symphony work, solo performances, etc... The sensitivity, responsiveness, and articulation, plus the wires and the whole mechanism is connected, no strings or straps, have always worked for me! The choice of snares makes the big difference. I usually use the gut, and the gut/wire combo for orchestral, and straight wire for all else. I also have quite a few classic throw off, while not "super sensitive," they do have the extended wires, plus the marching snares with the P-90 vector throw.

I have a brass shell 5/14 outfitted with a Kentville kangaroo on top. It has what I believe are original snares(?). It barks. Very clear articulation at a variety of tunings. I use it once or twice a month for a trad jazz gig.

Dig the feel and sound. Can’t get on with them for the kit too much in the way I like to get close to my snare those Gaurds are a little large but I like it for concert use. My first one was a’65 belonged to Jay and the Americans drummer Brian Cano(sp?) Have had a few including a pre serial brass 6 1/2 beautiful drums!

Aside from the tricky mechanism, the key to these type snares is that the wires or gut go all the way across the snare head. My old Ludwig & Ludwig snare had this too, with a different mech. The key for me when I sit down to play, is I want a deeper drum, so 1979 B/O label 6.5x14" gets me the sound I want. Zits and all!

I play out regularly with a 1964 SS. It's got bark, bite & the ability to go from sloppy to ultra crispy quickly & easily. I've never found it 'finicky'.

Got it from the original owner whose parents bought it for in 1929! This was 25 years ago, but having the history is awesome!

Yes I use an early 70’s 6.5x14 all the time. It is very versatile. I don’t find the mechanism to be a problem at all. I did put new guards on it when I first got since they were missing.

I’ve got a trio (Black Beauty, hammered bronze and 1971 cut-badge COB. As others have said, I don’t find them that finicky, and use them in a variety of settings.
