Do Bop kits lose their luster?

I might further suggest that drummers with bop sized sets tend to own multiple drum sets. When such a person decides it's time to downsize their collection, but are still playing, they would be most inclined to sell off the "specialty" sets first and hang on to the more general purpose sized ones. So maybe the bop sized set goes first...or perhaps just as likely the Bonham or Peart sized set, while the sets of a more "Swiss Army Knife" nature get retained.

It would depend on what gigs the person is getting of course but in general it makes more sense to hang on to something using more midline sizes to cover all the bases.

Just another thought.

Bop kits suck. They aren’t worth anything. But don’t throw them away. To be nice, I’ll take them off your hands for free and that will save you space and the anger of just having to look at them. Especially any old round badge Gretsch or Sonor phonic bop kits. PM me and we can work out details.
Has this ever worked for anyone?

That's my point. Why are people selling them if they are so "wonderful"? I dunno, I just don't consider an 18" a bass drum. It's like a guitar player showing up with a ukulele. Personal pref I guess. I think deep down it's more about the schlep or a hipster fad.
Isn’t the hipster fad 24” kicks? You’re telling me it’s 18”?

Can’t keep up.

You made a thread to bash bop kits. There’s a lot of things “I don’t get” but what good does it do to beat around the bush and hint at how lame you think something is?

We all have things we don’t get, but I found out a long time ago that those who do get them don’t care what others think.

Just so you know, I'm not trying to argue about this. I was recalling various pieces of information, and sometimes we don't remember quite right. Anyway, you asked for links, which is a fair question. These are all pretty recent.

Here's one where the seller mentions having several kits besides what he's selling.

Here's one where the seller sold more than one bop kit, so he had multiple.

This seller had separate threads for both INDe and Canopus bop kits. I also saw video of him playing different bop kits than those being sold.

Again, it's not an argument that we need to win or lose. I was just sharing information, as is my habit. Best wishes to you!
I haven't played anything bigger than an 18 in 20 years. And I'm attracted to shiny objects and don't like clutter, so things come and go. And whatever drums you've seen me playing in videos are either rentals or house kits. So there you go.
And thanks for checking out the music.

I guess a little sarcarsm and humor don't work with you? I'm actually enjoying all the divergent opinions here in what is called a discussion forum. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

I’m too jaded for hurt feelings.

If you want to have insightful discussion, you could’ve asked, “for those who have had bop kits, how practical were they? “
Rather then calling them whimpy hipster kits…

Just a thought.

“I'm just happy to see a "real rock sized" kit for sale in here! I'm afraid a lot of these cats have gone "bop" on us.”

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS BOP KIT?
Gretsch Photo 2.jpeg

Because it's awesome.
This is my Bop Kit. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My Bop Kit is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

Without me, my Bop Kit is useless. Without my Bop Kit, I am useless. I must play my Bop Kit true. I must play groovier than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must bop him before he bops me. I will ...

FB, EBay, and CL seem glutted with "big" rock kits that are not selling....whether lots of drums or just drums that are too big. The bop kits tend to be the ones that sell first.
I rarely see any pre-1990's bop kit last for sale very long as long as they're reasonably priced. The big rock kits have to be near "give-away" prices to move. It's an advantage to have the smaller kit
taking up less space. For those getting up in years and reducing down to their last couple of kits.....the bop might be one of the last to go just because it has does have such a small footprint,
tends to have lower volume, and is easier to move around. Those are all pluses for many seniors. And even for non-seniors in a smaller living space.....the bops (or smaller 4-5 pc kits) are a big plus.

Carry on everyone. I do the get the jazz aspect and the easier schlep. I jut prefer for my bass drum to go "BAM" not "puh". I guess everyone gravitates to what moves them. Bass drum chops aren't as pronounced in trad jazz as they are in soul, funk, and rock. It's more hi-hat and ride cymbal leading the way. On the flip side, I'm not crazy for any bass drums bigger than 22 either.

The 18" bass drum has little to do with trad jazz (dixieland and swing). Even most late 40s to 50s bebop recordings were done using 20" or bigger bass drums. 18" bass drums made their entry in the post-bop era with players like Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette, who used their bass drums a lot for comping. It's not about chops, it's about the sound and the role of the bass drum.

About 95% of my playing is small-group jazz, for which I use a 16" bass drum. For any other style of music where a low bass drum sound is desired (also big band), I prefer my 20" RB over any 18" I have owned. So it's not about losing their luster, it's about the right tool for the job. If you're a farmer and you buy a sports car instead of a tractor because it looks cool, you might end up selling it because it doesn't work that well for schlepping hay bales...

Chops maybe not.

But groove is everything with the kick in those styles.

A 24” larger works less in those (reinforced) situations as the frequency can get lost.

My first pro level kit was an 18/12/14 Gretsch kit . I have had a few other 18” bass drum kits over the years but they just don’t do it for me . Now 20” bass drums I love and they will always be my favourite size . The 18” bass drum kits I have owned have been a tough sell as the market is much smaller for them than that of larger bass drums .
Surprised to hear that bop size kits are a tough sell. In years past, it seems that they were in high demand, especially the vintage bop kids.
