i started using a 20" floor tom back in 1985. IT IS NOT A BASS DRUM. i have 3 , one for each kit. i use remo black dot on top , evans resonant tom on bottom. Ian Pace , Bobby Caldwell and others use/used them. they sound awesome when tuned low. i was working at geetar center around 1992 when drum sizes started shrinking and prices started going up the 18x20 tom was the first to get discontinued. i like low pitch toms and mine are 10x14,12x16,16x18,18x20. all 1980's tama superstars. i dont like the sound of tiny toms. i had 8x12 & 9x13 toms once. the 20" has to be tuned low to sound good. i have 3 identical kits and all the drums in the other 2 are piano black laquer. this is a foto of my home practice kit.

Bonzo reportedly alternated between 18" and 20" floor toms on his Vistalites, during the filming of The Song Remains the Same, so i've heard...

Not that tall Chris! Around 6foot mark. The drums are gloss black and they are pictured in the members gallery under Phils toys! I usually never use both floor toms. Hard to twist my body to reach a second floor tom given the sizes! I like the 20 best due to the low sonic rumble!
Peace!

I used an 18x20 about 30 years ago for maybe 2 or 3 years. They can work but they also can make a bass drum sound small too (I was using 26's at the time so it wasn't an issue). They don't work tensioned up very high..that I remember; it's such a deep sound that all you hear above the drum are the sticks smacking the head, but at any real distance they can get down there with the bottom head brought up a good amount with the top pretty loose.

Powell DID use one pretty religiously and so did Bobby Colomby early on when he had the chrome Fibes (a 16 & 20 I believe). He usually stayed off it unless he was doing an opening single stroke roll to get under the horns. I prefer 18's myself.

in 1980 i bought a brand new slingerland 5 ply, no re-rings, 45 degree bearing edges, mahogany finish kit. 26x14 bass, 20x18 floor tom, 14x14 rack tom (not a floor tom, factory tom mount). i have few regrets in life, but one is ever selling that set.

Back in 76 I custom ordered a set of Slingys in 16x24, 9x13,10x14 and 18x20. The 18x20 is a hell of a drum. I keep looking for a 16x18 that I can get reasonable and recover in the same gloss white finish. I never use that kit anymore and just have to hang onto it.

Here's my 11 piece kit prior to selling the snare and 20"x18" floor tom.

I like the sound of an 18" floor tom. 20" floor toms are a tad trickier to tune IMO, but can sound absolutely thunderous with a little patience.

Sizes on this kit:
10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 FY, 20 FT; Bass #1: 24", Bass #2: 26"; Snare 14x8 Ludwig Coliseum.

i never ever saw a 20...im wondering how many are even using 18?
18 is awesome. I'd rather have an 18 than a 16 as my only floor tom. I always had the 16 on the hairy edge of tuning stability and with the 18 you can get that solid fat note and it's still punchy. I could definitely see 12/15/18 as a thing.

I rehearsed at a studio that had a kit with a 20” floor tom. I’d always smack my hands on the rim. Not a fan.

I have 18/20; I could see a combo of 16/18/20 being sweet. I have 16" mounted toms; I would prefer a 16/18. the 18/20 makes it hard to reach over to the 20.

20” FT? No….

I have a few 18s and those are huuuge enough. Heck, they’re even too much to carry around most places.

18” is plenty big.
