Dream snare has arrived! Pork Pie Solid Rosewood

One is a 12 ply 8mm shell. The other is a solid steambent shell. Very different makeups, very different sounds. It's one of the times I can hear a very discernable difference in the make of the shells.
I think I'm going to hang on to all 3 and sell a few other drums I'm not just glued to.

Totally meant to do that yesterday when I swapped heads and rims. I'll do that soon.
Not sure what edge he used on your particular drum, but Bill has always done inner 45 with a round over on the outside to match the collar of Remo heads.

Man, I'm so proud for you.... well worth the wait! They all look great but that new Pork is a real highlight in the collection.

So the incredible wife I had told me as you may have saw to keep the Tama rosewood. It's just too good of a snare, as well as rare/limited, to sell. So I've had some time now to compare the 2 rosewoods.
The pork pie is incredibly.... Solid. It's like a bell brass snare where those are described to hit back when you hit it. It's a controlled sound with not too much ring. Loud, doesn't seem to hit a ceiling easily, and overall just the snare sound I've dreamed of.
The Tama is equally as amazing, but with some differences. This one seems to have a little bit more crack than solid thud behind it, as well as being a tad bit more sensitive for rolls. These were a legend when they first came out for a reason.
Very, very glad to have both of these. I think these 2 would be the ultimate 2 I'd have to keep from my collection if it ever came down to that.

Just saw the original snare that started this build is on eBay. I was bidding on it but I think I've unfortunately hit my limit.
Just wanted to say I used this snare at my latest gig and it was absolutely incredible. So glad to own it!

I think someone earlier requested interior pics of this snare. Took some new ones today.
I also switched all of my main snares from Controlled Sound X batters to regular Controlled Sound, and I am so much more into those heads. They're definitely more sensitive and less boxy. On to pics!

I've been using my other 2 Rosewood snares lately and this Pork Pie has been the backup. The Pearl Masterworks has been on the kit the most, followed by the Pork Pie 8 lug Rosewood (for sale) used earlier this year. Both of those are absolutely incredible.
I decided to revisit this solid shell pork pie this week. What a drum! I can really tell how the solid shell differs from the ply shells. This one hits like a metal drum imo. The cast hoops I put on really make this thing cut through anything. Bill Detamore easily does the best edges in the business. I think this one cuts just as much as my bell brass.
Just a very interesting snare and is different from anything else I own. I love rediscovering a piece of equipment after leaving it alone for a while!

So after a while with this drum, I noticed I much preferred my Pearl Masterworks Rosewood, and Temple Rosewood to this Pork Pie/Cask. It has been weird for me for a while. It seemed very boxy and limited in tuning range no matter what heads or hoops I used. Patrick on here raves about his Cask rosewood, so I knew something was up with mine.
After talking with him, he finally realized my edges for this drum were the issue. I never thought about the edges since Bill is one of the best in the business for that.
Turns out he simply went with a very round over, vintage edge on this snare and very shallow snare beds. That's been the issue this entire time.
I sent the drum back to Cask, and Micah did his normal edges and beds for his solid shells.
It's an entirely new, and absolutely phenomenal snare now! Much broader tuning range, and much more sensitivity. Bill still does amazing work, I think he just went a different route this time.
New edges, and old ones below them.

My Cask referenced is a phenomenal drum.
I also had a unique N&C Madagascar Rosewood that was really nice, but the Cask just sounded sweeter, so I sold the N&C.
