I found my 12" Pearl MLX tom had a little rattle and it took time to finally figure out what it was.
I checked all the usual suspects (Mounts, lose tension rods, lose screws, etc.) and nada.

FINALLY figured out - the air grommet was lose and rattling when I hit the tom.
I tried a couple things to get it back to work but it never tightened up right to not rattle, so I just took it off.

Well...

The air hole faces me...

my OCD is kicking in. :laughing5:

I want to put the grommet back in.
I don't want to use any type of adhesive in case I can't get it tight enough to not rattle.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to get the grommet in and tight so it won't rattle. :dontknow:

Think of it as a sizzle effect for your snare lol

Would replacing the grommet with a new one that fits better be an option?

I re finished a drum, the grommet looked pretty ugly after prying it out, but carefully re crimping it on there with little taps on a flat head screw driver got it to stay put and look just fine from the outside ymmv
Another alternative would be hot glue which can easily be peeled off if needed

Put in the lightest "spacer" around you can fit. It could be anything from cheese cloth to plumber's teflon tape.

Sometimes the grommet is ok but the badge is bouncing off the shell.

I picked up my Gretsch Renown 6pc for $700 from GC because they rattled and the previous owner couldn't figure it out. Every badge grommet was loose. Tightened them up and I love that kit.
They sound like a much more expensive kit without the rattles!

I would just use some black electrical tape on the inside of the grommet so you can’t see it.
