OK. I just found out the main problem; know body in the industries really cares. I only checked 5 companies on their website.

DEPTH X DIAMETER
Ludwig
Gretsch
DW

DIAMETER X DEPTH
Pearl
Tama

Hum, so do what you wish, I guess. LOL

sherm
In the '60s, Gretsch used diameter x depth when the other companies were doing depth by diameter

LOL Sorry guys I just had to post this. I guess it really doesn't matter but I wished everyone would go to a standard when talking drum sizes. I believe over the years; the industry seems to change from time to time. Just as I get used to using Depth X Head size I've noticed while reading post on forums lately most are using Head size x Depth now.

Do I need to change, or does it matter? Or you can just tell me where to go. LOL

Please keep this lighthearted I don't mean to upset anyone.

sherm
I have always stated drum sizes as diameter x depth (12x8, for example).
It's how I learned it and I don't plan to change anytime soon.
Cite it whichever way you want Cherry, 'cuz yer gonna either get the question, or ask it, anyway.

Depth x Diameter on the left, Diameter x Depth on the right:

I don't care so much about depth. It's the diameter I need to know when buying heads.

Depth first makes almost as much sense as month/day/year…

Interesting, all the late 80’s/early 90’s Tama catalogs I had growing up listed sizes depth x diameter.

I pay NO attention to this conundrum. Somehow whenever I read a drum dimension I know what they are describing without deep thought.

My first kit was bass drum, tom, and snare only. Ordered a Tama add-on floor tom that was supposed to be a 16", but turned out to be an 18" because the guy in the store didn't know how to read 16x18...
