Hey everyone,

I've always wanted a really old snare to restore, so I took a shot at this Duplex snare from eBay.

I have a ton of questions. First, the size of the shell is puzzling to me. It's 4" deep, but the length is odd. Would I need to order special head for this? It came with calf-skin heads that were completely shot with multiple holes.

Is it also missing a lug/claw assembly, as well as maybe a strap? From what I gather this could be a Boy Scout model? (See catalog scan)

My next question is how to clean this up. You can see that it'll clean up quite nicely, and I intend to use cape cod cloths eventually, but how about initially? Is this indeed brass?

Also, it looks like the owner put a light bulb inside to keep the calf-skin heads the appropriate temperature. I'll actually probably keep this in as it didn't add any extra holes or anything,

Lastly! Can anyone ball-park a date for this?

Thanks in advance, I'm a super-rookie when it comes to snares this old, but these things have so much mojo that I'd love to learn more.

-Andrew

Oh absolutely. Too cool to get rid of, but I completely agree.
