after many years, just noticed on my 71-72ish kit, the kick seems to have a less rounded edge than the accompanying 13 & 16. were they making the edges less rounded over at that point, or could this kick have been alterered? it's not crazy sharp, but it's also not as round as the toms.

In my experience Ludwig edges of that era weren't particularly precise. I wouldn't put this sort of variation beyond the realm of possibility from the factory at that time.

I have found the early 70's drums to have rounder edges. Some of the mid 70's have sharper. At least, from my experiences with 6 or so 70's clear maple 3 ply kits. I've had some that were totally round, and others super sharp. The sharper edges have a nice attack and sustain, usually. The rounder edges more body "BUM."
