Evolution of Modern drum sizes

It's fashion. Like wide-leg jeans or Member's Only jackets.
I think for the most part it is. Many on here that are older, lived with certain sizes for many years, and regard them as the norm. I grew up somewhere between 4 piece kits and 20 piece kits, and have different ideas of what looks right. I would never have a 14" deep bass drum on a modern kit, because to me it just looks too small.

As far as how it feels under foot, I also think depends on what you are used to, and how you play your bass pedal. I play heal up, with beater on or off the head. Heal down with a deep bass could probably feel very sluggish. I have two 22" x 20" deep bass drums on my big white Saturn kit, and they don't feel sluggish at all to me. Probably because of how I play my pedal. I have a 28" x 14" Leedy bass drum that I find a little sluggish, but I think that has to do with the very large radius. Just like large diameter toms have less rebound than small diameter toms.
