Fire: Jimmy Hendrix

I bucked that tune for so long because I just couldn’t get it. The guitarist in my new band is a major Hendrix fan and is constantly pushing us to cover Hendrix tunes but mine and the great Mitch Mitchell styles are so divergent that most of it gives me fits.

Either way, I was at a Danny Seraphine clinic and his explanation on odd time really sent me on a journey in my drumming that allowed me on to play some odd time but more importantly to catch those fills and changes that would usually slip by me.

Again I set to work of Fire and not only could play it but understood it. We’ve only run it through at practice but are opening are next show with it. Playing a tune like Fire with authority and confidence is a very satisfying accomplishment for me.

Mitch Mitchell was a great drummer.

When I had an adult band back in the day (15+ yrs ago), we played:
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Clash - Train in Vain
Hendrix - Fire
ZZ Top - Tush
Sabbath - War Pigs
Zep - Immigrant Song
Nirvana - Teen Spirit

In "my" current band, made up of kids aged 8-17 on acoustic guitars, we only do covers:
Pipeline
Wipeout
Lion Sleeps Tonight (I do a reggae beat)
This Land Is Your Land (rocked out!)
Todd Rundgren - Bang the Drum (my 10 y.o. sings it!)
Beatles - Here Comes the Sun

When I was a bassist in a reggae band also way back in the day, we did Dead covers, jam bands, etc. The guitarist, keyboardist and drummer were stellar, and I used to love playing:

Dead - Eyes of the World & The Other One
Allman Bros - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed & Whipping Post
Phish - First Tube
Bob Marley - Jammin'

Mitch Mitchell was a great drummer.

Mitch Michell to me is what Bonham is to other drummers. I love his playing style and Fire was a land mark for me in my own playing. Such a great song.

My band plays a lot of odd covers to fill our set in. If we play 20 songs 5 are covers and the rest are originals. My favorites right now are:

"Burn" by The Cure
"Wicked Game"- Chris Isaak
"Cities in Dust"- Souxie and the Banshees
"Hazy Shade of Winter"- The Bangles (their version, cover of a cover.. haha)
"Wild Flower"- The Cult

Ones we are working on that I'm excited about:
"Dreaming"- Blondie
"I Melt with you"- Modern English
And I just suggested "Words"- Missing Persons

Our band back in the 60's was a cover band that could do justice to songs of various types of rock and R&B music. Some of my favorites that we played were:

Good Lovin'...........................The Rascals
Walk Don't Run......................The Ventures
Hideaway..............................Freddy King
Look Through Any Window......The Hollies
Shake...................................Otis Redding
