Gavin Harrison often say Steve Janson was a huge influence on him, even though he has little chops. Harrison points out how creative Janson was in creating the perfect beats for song, putting the snare on 1 and 2 for example.

I always liked how Bruford used them during the King Crimson "Discipline" era. Not sure if they were actual octobans or his own version of them, but he'd use them in place of a ride cymbal.
I believe Bruford used something called Dragon Drums instead of the Octabons.

Edit: I found a snapshot of Bruford with his Dragon Drums. Looks like the diameter might be slightly wider? I like the angled cuts on the bottom. Looks nicer to me than the Octobons.

There is video of him playing them on YouTube from the early 80s comedy show Friday's. Two songs. Elephant Talk and Tela Hun Ginjeet.
