Who else loves getting all new heads top and bottom? I just got remo clear emperors for batter, clear ambassadors for reso. 8/10/12/14/16. Tama starclassic walnut/birch. I love how it seems like I have a whole new drum kit. The sound of the toms is ridiculously good. I have always been a single ply guy, but decided to try 2 ply this time. I like how rounded and fat the toms sound with the 2 ply. I also switched from evans to remo for this head change. I was big on evans for a long time but felt like a complete change this time around. I'll snap some pics for fun when I get home. Thats another thing about crisp new heads. The drums just look cool after a new head install.

Emperors are very balanced. They are the Goldilocks of drumheads for me. They retain the natural tone of Ambassadors but also add some warmth and natural muffling of unwanted overtones. They can handle a bit of a smacking too.

I prefer coated Emperors for snare and tom batters, smooth Ambassadors for tom resos and coated Powerstroke 3 for bass drum batter.

Yeah clear emperors are a great drum head. A while back I was inspired to put them on my Gretsch drum set because that’s what Vinnie Colaiuta uses on his Gretsch set. I really noticed my floor toms sounding great. The whole kit sounded good but I remember being really impressed with the floor toms

Just re-headed the Starclassic Walnut/Birch Performer (fabulous kit - wow) and the Starclassic Maple. I have found that the Evans G2s are a little more controlling than an emperor, so I am back to clear emperors as well.

And my back hurts. But it was worth it!

I went to Attack heads a few years ago. I replaced Remo Ambassadors on toms with Attack's equivalent and was amazed at how much better they sounded! Plus, they tune up easier, hold the tuning better, and last longer. Their coating is pretty much indestructible. And their revolutionary "Orbit" head for a bass drum batter is pretty amazing. Anyway, certainly nothing wrong with Remo, Evans, Aquarian, etc. But I do think Attack is not particularly well known and worthy of consideration.

I might give it a shot. Which model Attack drumheads are the equivalent to coated and clear ambassadors?

The last time I re-skinned my entire drumset — batters and resos — was around eight years ago. (Remo Fiberskyn FDs on toms and snares, Fiberskyn PS3 on BDs w/muffling rings cut down on BD resos.) I switched from coated Ambs over coated Dips and coated PS3s on BDs, and the change absolutely did sound a whole new drumset.

Since my 8-year old Fiberskyn batter heads are now quite bubbled from use, I recently bought a replacement set of batter heads, but the drums are sounding so good and recording so well that the new heads have been sitting here for months, waiting for the drums to give me a good reason to make the change. (Plus, I'm really, really lazy...)

I can relate. I recently put the Remo Permatone heads which are pretty well used back on my Gretsch set and I wish I never removed them in the first place. I read from other people online that Permatone heads that USA customs come with are the best heads for those drums. I agree. I think they’re made better than standard ambassador heads too.

They call it the "Proflex 1." They used to make a "Royal 1," which was made with the same Mylar that Remo uses, but I think they have discontinued that series and are just going with their film called "Dynaflex" on all their heads. I've used both and can't really tell any difference in sound or feel. I mentioned it before, but their coating is really impressive. I've got a snare drum batter that's been on there for about 3 years now (on the snare I play the most) and still looks and sounds practically like new!
