id recommend used slingerlands.

almost 25 years later, and my 70s slingz still get gigs here and there(mostly stay at home for practice). but this is after years of punk rock madness!

they are still rock solid and sound great. i think i will die before they do.

Stage Customs and 80's Imperialstars are priced about the same for a shell pack for standard or power tom sizes. You can find nice used shell packs of either for $200-$300 fairly readily.
Last year I found my nephew a mint set of 1999 Stage Customs in dark blue - hardly a mark, dazzling chrome, no rust....for $450. Didn't hurt that included was $300 in heavy duty pro hardware and $450 in pro cymbals. Sound-wise the Stage Customs are very similar to my Yahama 8000's and vintage Tama Superstars.

If you're considering vintage Tama Imperialstars, then consider the vintage Swingstars too. Same shell. Only the lugs and mounts are a little lighter. Sound is very close to the Imperialstars.
