Bobby was a GREAT drummer from Boston who unfortunately never got his "due."
Bobby, Clifford Jarvis, and Tony Williams studied with Alan Dawson at the same time. They ALL had the same edge to their playing. I used to see Bobby occasionally in Boston when I was going through town for gigs. Tony told me once that "his idea" of playing four quarter notes on the hi hats came from (or was inspired by) Bobby Ward. (However in my research I first heard Lionel Hampton doing it first.) Bobby, Tony, and Clifford, used to play and practice together as well. Now all of them are gone. Bobby Ward was a wonderful drummer.
He recently played and recorded with Salim Washington.
But it was his recording with Ken McIntyre called "Stone Blues" that first lit me up!
