plus if you get into 18" bass drums - or small kits and you're the sole drummer in a hard rock band; you have to work your arse off; to push the small drums..
and you're not going to have the tom tones to do " Sunshine Of Your Love" or "White Room" when it's called... and it will be.
not to mention inagadddavida is out

at the least add some top and bottom toms if you're going to "hard rock" a 20/12/14.
Need some tonal room to move around; some tones; if the sole drummer not double drumming

I prefer 12" and 14" because of volume, but I also prefer a 22", again for volume/balance. I've played a couple miced 18" that were definitely alright, but totally reliant on the pa, they both had some black suede Evans batter. I actually have come to like the way the 14" floor tom sound starts to break up when I lay into it

20 12 14 is a tidy sound for what you've described and I have used those sizes extensively but a 22 gives you a little more headroom . Minmum effort , larger effect .

If you're mic'd up properly , especially for bigger venues , then it comes down to how your personal touch connect with the band's dynamic parameter, set list etc .

My thinking is " better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it " .

Pdp make great sounding rock drums. They’re not expensive and in my experience better sound, easier tuning than lower end gretsch. Maybe you could afford a nice bop set and a pdp rock set. Best of both worlds. That’s my modes operandi. Use the tools that are right for the gig. Although a 20,12,14 gretsch is a great all around kit. If there is one that could do it, probably that. (Or a five ply Slingerland from the early 80’s. Lol)

one extra drum up top can really make a difference
especially up top where you'll use it ,is handy (..

Chromey was 22s ……
But he did use 24s for a lengthy time …
