Very good. Thank you for posting this, Joe. I have Chet's wonderful Gretsch book.

That drum will always be a stunner, through time immemorial.

Hi Wayne, There definitely is a lot of respect worldwide right now for all the Billy Gladstone drums and especially the man himself.

What an amazing design.
Look at those tube lugs. The diameter of the tube it self compared to the posts and their flange at the shell. Beautiful.
Did any other makers use those same tube lugs?

The first 3-way tuning drum was an A.M. Hoskins snare drum, made in Minneapolis, MN and patented on Nov 6, 1913.
Pictured are the lugs from a 1939 Gretcsh Gladstone, the Gold Billy Gladstone, and a Tama 3-way.
The Gretsch Gladstone had an art deco designed single post lug with an inner blade and slot system that was prone to bending.
Billy's own lugs had two plain post lugs with a stronger inner hex shaped rod and receiver system.
Tama copied this system on their 3-way drum and Arnie Lang made a replica version.

I wish there was a replica Gretsch 3-way.
The single post is just awesome.

I just realized why I like these tube lugs and not a lot of the newer ones; there is no foot or flange or whatever you call it that is where the lug meets the exterior of the shell.
