Hi! I'm considering a set of old Ludwig's that comes with some old Zildjians. The owner sent me this pic of the stamp, but I'm stumped. What is this "MIR" marking? Anyone seen this before? Thanks!

That’s from the set of cymbals that went with the zero-gravity drum set installed at the Mir space station in 1986.

Never seen one of those in-hand before. First generation AMIR. After this style, the Amirs got the same die stamp as the A's. From around 1982. Here's an older forum thread on the topic. And supposedly very good cymbals....close to the A's. Maybe that's why Zildjian redesigned them so quickly.....if they were cutting into "A" line sales.

That AMIR thread brings up some questions. I recently picked up an "AMIR" set of hi hats. Not gen 1 though. Die stamp is typical 1980's "A". Inking is barely visible as "ghost" lettering. But the bottom cymbal is not die stamped or serialized. Inking has been cleaned off. It sort of looks like the Zildjian Impulse in that link above, but with more hammering swirls. Almost like a copied Paiste Rude - which Pearl sort of did with their "Wild" Series. Without anything else to go by it's probably a Pearl Wild. I'd rather have the Amir bottom. And this Amir top sounds pretty decent. A cut above today's entry level B8's from Zild/Paiste

JDA, that's one MINTY fresh AMIR. Probably near the end of the line for them in the later 1980's. The early AMIRS had the very plain big block ink lettering on them. The later versions had the flowery script.
