I was sold a Mahogany shell - sold to me as a vintage WFL.

14x20

Thing is -- the grain is vertical like vintage MIJ. The holes for the legs are for the standard barrel type ones in the typical position.

Were the vintage mahogany WFL shells ever vertical grained? I imagine this would be the easiest way to tell if it is possibly WFL. The hole spacing for the lugs are 1 3/4 inch. I can not find my Luswig Standard lugs -- sure they are somewhere in my basement -- but not sure where right now.

Here are some pics (coming in a few minutes) of the shell. The rail mount is dead center - might be another good clue.

I honestly would not be disappointed if this were MIJ - (I am a big MIJ guy and it is a very solid shell in very good condition that I will use somehow for sure) I just need to figure it out because I also have a Ludwig project that I want to confirm is pure Ludwig.

Attaching pics....noticed previous rail mount holes (patched) as well as a cymbal mount on the side there. The pic with my hand in there is from the batter side.
Also...inside seam appears to be opposing.....roughly 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.

Yeah, that's not a WFL or Ludwig shell I'm sorry to say. If it were it would have re-rings and be mahogany/poplar/mahogany 3 ply.

Probably not actually mahogany either.

Thank KO - at least I only paid $50 for it.....and will make for a great BD nonetheless. Some vintage Luan MIJs can sound as good or better than vintage American BDs.
