The Pearl Ian Paice is a 14x6 and a half and IMO the best drum for the $$$, it’s a good deal heavier then your average steel snare available, I had at one point 36 snares, and it was always my favorite steel snare. My suggestion is to use S hoops on ALL your snares, the rim shots are substantially fatter, AND they will pay for themselves in saved sticks!!! And strangely enough, rarely de-tune! The Pearl Ian also comes stock w/lug locks, which I love. The drum is substantially head and shoulders above anything else irrespective of price range. I had a very heavy (and expensive) ocheltree snare, same dimension as my Ian drum, no contest, the Pearl Ian blew it away. Don’t take my word for it, try it out, it will not disappoint you!
I remember, in the late 90's, Pearl sold a Chad Smith snare drum that also used a very heavy steel shell, although the old Chad Smith was a 14x5.
Do you know if the shell thickness is the same?
