How shallow is too shallow?

I have a 16x22 bass drum that I’m having cut down ideally to 14x22. However, I believe that doing so would leave an extra hole by each lug on the side that’s cut down. How shallow is too shallow? Like what would a 13x22 bass drum sound/feel like? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I had a 20x18 cut down to about 13" depth for that reason. It might works very well for softer playing with a complete reso. Meaning that for louder playing, maybe with a ported front, it's a bit shallow, with less headroom. 22x16 is a great size for all kinds of contexts. Why do you want to cut it down at all?

Thanks, Seb77. I’ve just never liked it. I bought the set new in 06 and from the first time I set it up, I felt I made a mistake and should have ordered a 14. Having owned and played on many kits, I just don’t like the feel of bass drums deeper than 14 as much. I’ve hardly played this drum for years because of it. It’s a set I’ll never sell for sentimental reasons so I figured I’d just cut it down.

I've played a couple Sliingerland 22x12 late 1950's bass drums. And to me they sounded fuller and stronger than the 22x14 versions.

I've heard Ginger Baker used a 20 x 12 with Cream. There are numerous photos confirming head size, but I'm a verifiable link confirming depth, at present.

I've heard 10" deep marchers that didn't seem to be hurting for punch. Shorter than that and it might not mount toms well.

I ended up having mine cut down to right around 14" and I'll just live with the extra holes. Maybe the extra venting will be advantageous somehow!

First 24 I had was x 10. More attack...less boom the way I had it. I'm picking up a shallow 24 this weekend.

I've always liked 14" deep bass drums. My 2006 Pearl EXR kit had a 16x20, so I plugged the holes nearest the batter side and sent the shell to Precision Drum for cutting. Came out great and the plugged holes don't bother me at all!
