I’m thinking about getting a custom tom built for my kit

It would estimate to around $1,000 for it, but I want to commission an 18x18 floor tom from Cameron Brown. He said he’s confident he can match the finish on my RC, and he’ll work with me on getting original hardware for the drum.

Question is, should I? I would definitely love this drum forever. Problem is, it can never compete with a real 80s recording custom because it just isn’t one.

Why? You can get an actual 18" RC floor for significantly less than that, you just need to wait for it.

The original RC was 18x16. Are you set on the 18" depth?
Have you checked out the Yamaha Recording Custom facebook group?

I would wait until one popped up. It could take two weeks or two years.

I know the original depth. I figure why not go for something unique if I’m going to custom build?

As for why I’m not waiting, there have only been 3 traceable sales of 18”x16” Hot Red RC Floor Toms in the last 4-5 years. I’m not holding out for that kind of luck.

I would. If the color I need wasn’t so inconveniently rare. Combined with the uncommon sizing, I’m not really feeling like trying to wait for that. The last time one sold that I can readily see anywhere on the internet was years ago.

Buy the first 18" you see, in any colour. Cameron Brown could refinish it in Hot Red.
