After thinking it was hopeless she finally popped up.
Tama 3mm copper 14x5.5” with hammered outside of shell. Original heads and hardware. It had been just sitting in a case and now it’s my time to care for this beautiful instrument. Very clean and heavy shell, new old stock.

Very cool drum and shell. Have always wanted to pick one up. Slight correction on the shell construction as it is not cast, but a sheet of copper that is hammered while flat, then rolled and welded. Whether that makes much of a difference to the sound is arguable.

You know that for a fact? I find it very unlikely that its’ hammered before rolling. But, if you have a solid source for that info I may be wrong.
I’ve played and held a drum like this up close and I couldn’t even see the seam. I inspected it quite well since I was considering buying it (which I was stupid enough NOT to do)
The hammered metal shells from Tama are usually hammered after being rolled and welded.

Congrats! It’s a great sounding and looking drum.

Would love to hear it.

I know how hammering effects a 1mm shell but would it be anything other than cosmetic on a 3mm shell?

After some digging I can confirm yes, it’s not casted to my surprise. The picture to the left of the snares shows how it’s made.

There’s a big jump from 1mm to 3mm so it’s definitely a difference in sound.

I mean as far as the hammering goes. I would imagine hammering affects the inside most with the sound waves deflecting off many angles surfaces internally. This has a smooth inside and hammered outside. Not sure what hammering just the outside would achieve.
Wish I could hear it.

I knew it wasn’t cast but OK this hammering the shell before rolling sure is interesting. Thanks for the info.
The sad thing is, some 8-9 years ago there was a new Copper drum sitting in a local drumshop. I tapped it from time to time when I visited the shop, played it a little and it sat there for at least two years, unsold. It sounded fabulous. One day I thought OK I’ll buy it but then it was sold. If you snooze you loose!

What are the odds?
I found the 3mm Aluminum shell as well.
Now the 2 are together.
Random but I’ll take it.
