Hey everyone! A few years back I bought this vintage Gretsch bass drum from a flea market for $50. I haven't done anything with it but I plan on restoring it soon and building a vintage kit around it. I've been trying to date this thing by researching online and I thought I had it narrowed down by the Round Badge. I'm guessing it was made in the 1940's to the late 50's? However the one detail that's throwing me off is the fact that this drum seems to measure 23"?!...I know Remo makes 23" heads so I'm not worried about getting replacements, I'm just curious if anyone knows how old this thing might be? It doesn't have any holes for spurs, it has 10 lugs, and the number "165" is stamped on the inside. Images are attached! Thank you in advance!

A lot of earlier bass drums were cut down in the late ‘40s - early ‘50s from their original 26” - 28” diameters to something more manageable. The heads would be custom made to fit, from hide, of course. Maybe this is one of those?

In the days of Calf heads; 23", 25" 27" didn't matter.... long as you had a Flesh Hoop that diameter you would wrap with Calf..as long as you had the hoop..

where that Stan calf Video..

By the sounds of that I’m guessing a modern 23” head likely won’t fit too well..
