These are so close to mint! They look brand new, I'm so lucky, now for the snare drum hunt!!!
Hi JC!!

You scored a really beautiful set of Rogers drums! Did it come with a double-tom holder? As to the correct snare drum, as others have already stated, it would be the COB Powertone.

Yes, it came with a double tom mount, thank you! Not sure if I will set them both up or not. Weird thing is, if set up as a 12, 13 then the badges face the drummer. I don't care about that really I'm just use to one tom up.

So, I am waiting for a Rodgers drum set to show up at my door. This will be my first rodgers kit that is all original. They are Dayton Era, 20, 12, 13 16. What exactly does Holiday mean?
I will be looking for the correct snare that goes with this drum set.
Nice. Looking lovely and thanks for sharing with us.

You may actually have a lefty set-up! Will be interesting to see more of the paper tags. The 13 is definitely a bit newer, as the speckled paint was not used in Covington; that is a true made in Dayton drum.

As you may know, Rogers solved the left/right 12/13 quandary in the Fullerton era by putting the script logo on BOTH sides of the mount, so the name would always face forward no matter the player's configuration.

Ugg - no more lefty kits please, I will be stalking you to buy it! I have an original lefty 13/16/20 60s Rogers that is my baby, welcome to the club, these drums really live up to the hype.

Arggg! The title of the thread is stinging by brain. It shows up at the top of the updated thread list but the “rodgers” (not capitalized and misspelled) is pegging my OCD meter. Help a brother out!
Sorry that bothers you. I will see if I can correct it for you. Hope I spelled everything correctly.

The best way to handle this is to find all the reasonably priced optional snares. ;)

So that would be a Powertone 8 lug wood shell snare in Champagne sparkle,
a COB Powertone 8 lug 5" snare,
a Dynasonic COB 10 lug 5",
and a Dynasonic COB 10 lug 6.5".

If money is no object, then look for a wood shell Dynasonic 5" 10 lug, but that will set you back about 2 grand or more, and they did make a 6.5" 10 lug version but I doubt you'll find one in your wrap.

You really can't go wrong with any of these, it's just a matter of taste, playing style and music genre.

If I were you, wait until the next drum show comes through town. You'll get a chance to try all the above mentioned snares. Then you'll actually know which one tickles your fancy the most. At THAT point begin your quest.

Happy hunting !

Congrats, JC! In my book, vintage Rogers drums sound as good or better than anything out there. Of course, that is my subjective view, but those suckers sound great........................all styles! I think the COB powertone snare drums are one of the great vintage values out there. The new wood Dynasonics are fabulous, but I have been a COB fan for yours because BRASS kicks ASS! Enjoy! You have done great!

I believe it was Harry Cangany who proclaimed the 60s Rogers as the “Cadillac of drums”. I’d say he was correct though that may step on some toes, especially if one is loyal to other brands of the day. There was no doubt that Rogers had the highest quality and most versatile mounting hardware of the period. They were also a tight knit group of employees (a family if you will) turning out top notch products. Though I’m sure there are others the only Rogers problem I’m aware of is the brass Bread and Butter lugs.

Not all Daytons are speckled…..early ones…no…

Not to belabor the point, but here is the partial timeline in question:

1966 - CBS buys Rogers from Henry Grossman; CBS moves the Rogers offices and warehousing from Cleveland to Dayton. All production remains in Covington. Paper tags are eventually changed to Dayton, but still uses flat gray interior paint.
1968 - CBS moves all production to Dayton; some Covington employees (Jerry Shields in particular) make the commute to Dayton. Interior paint changes to speckled.
1969 - CBS pulls all Ohio plugs and moves the entire Rogers operation to Fullerton; Some drum stock made the trip, and we start seeing mixed Dayton/Fullerton kits.

This is why Rogers collectors prefer the solid gray painted drums - it means they are Covington drums, whether or not they have a Cleveland or Dayton paper tag.

Lots of great information here, thank you for that!
I just set them up and played them. They sound very good right out of the box, bass drum needs some muffling on the reso head. The 16 sounds great, 13 could use a little tuning.
I dont like the way the 13 moves, I think the mounting system is a little strange. But overall I am happy, I only had a few minutes to play as I need to get back out in the shop!
