Folks, I don't want to create a separate thread for this, one of my good customers who bought this 4 pce SQ2 from me a couple years ago (16X22, 7X10, 8X12, 15X16) African Marble Gloss Candy Apple, Medium Beech , is selling the set for $5400 USD. If anyone has any interest , I can be the matchmaker :) View attachment 604593
WOW.

Medium Beech is THE BEST SQ2 shell choice. I’ve had heavy beech and thin beech and now own a medium beech kit and it’s easily the best out of the three. Punchy, warm, buttery smooth, just amazing.

And the heavy beech kit that I had was in the African Marble and that Gloss Candy Apple is even more beautiful.

Such amazing eye and ear candy. And looks like a great price, too.

Someone should pick this kit up asap!!

If I ever got another SQ2 (doubt it but) I'd probably go medium beech too. I had a heavy beech kit and didn't care for it. Too much attack and not enough tone. Especially in the FT and kick drum. I was happy to get back what I paid for it as I bought it used. I'm digging my medium maple SQ2 that I have now.

Having owned three wood thickness for beech, (vintage, medium, heavy), I liked medium the best but found the floor toms not having that low-end punch. It was best for vintage. I would go for medium beach, toms and kick and thin floor toms. I currently own a medium maple kit sq2 and love it. It's my favorite and my next favorite is vintage maple. But if I wanted a beech config, I would do that.

I went with medium beech for my rack toms and kick, thin for the FT's. The rosewood vintage series has my eye at the moment, basically the same shell as both are 9 ply 6mm but with a round-over edge. Could probably get a better deal now on a rosewood SQ2. But, as Tom Petty (RIP) says, the waiting is the hardest part.

How do you like the low end on the thin beech floor Tom’s?

I think the low end is fine. Beech tends to be pretty flat on the eq curve with maple being lowest and birch with scooped mids. I sold all my other kits so I have nothing to compair them to.
I just changed heads from clear ambassadors to black dots so I'll see if there's any change but I don't expect much difference, maybe just a little less overtones. I almost went with clear emperors but wanted the most sustain I can get. I also don't dampen my toms at all in live situations.

LOL, I saw that! Peeps had about a week to get in on the fun. Thy snooze thy lose.
I have a config ID at the lower price, I wonder if Sonor would honor it. My ID says price is valid until later this month.

What is y'alls take on medium beech vs heavy for snares?

For me always heavy with an SQ2 snare (beech , birch or maple) … Beech especially. SQ2 heavy beech is special. Crack , warmth and fullness. After heavy , my second choice for a Sonor snare is thin beech , that’s the main reason my side snare for my SQ2 kit is the Benny Greb snare. It does not have near the volume as the heavy beech , but has a nice snap and decay that’s addicting.

SQ2 bass drum , is where that medium beech shines , One of the very best most unique bass drums in the world in my opinion. FANTANTABULOUS!

With toms and floors that’s where one can have a lot of fun experimenting , but for me it’s medium beech all day for the toms and heavy beech on the floors (my favorite Sonor drum - heavy beech floor) … also a fan of thin beech floors.

But rule of thumb , if you haven’t had a chance to really experiment and live with SQ2’s , go medium beech for everything , and heavy beech on the snare.

Hope that helps!

I love my Sq2 kit in medium beech. The toms are incredible. They are by far the easiest to tune out of any kit I have had. Only bad thing is the lead time. Takes 12 to 13 months right now to get anything from them

^ Correct. He quoted me my price based on the lower MAP.
