I found myself laying down drum tracks on the stage of a local 650-seat venue that was closed for the evening. I think the last time I did something like that was back in the 80s, and it was at a much smaller club. Nevertheless, the drums sounded great on the wooden riser, and the club is well soundproofed.

I used my Ludwig Classic Maple Fab kit, Blue Sparkle, with a hammered LM402. I also utilized a wood hooped 3-ply mahogany/poplar Van Buren for a ballad. The engineer had me well mic'd. In addition to the close mics and overheads, he had an ambient mic set up about 50-75 feet away from me out on the dance floor. In all, a pleasant experience.

Cool!

Do you know how much of the 50-75’ he’ll use? If you can get your hands on some raw tracks I’d love to hear that 50-75’ one and how it ends up in the mix. Thx

That looks like a lot of fun, David! Good for you. The last time I did anything like that, I was in a large old wood barn with a similar set up. Drums on a riser, like a large live venue. We ended up with some amazing drum sounds: big, fat, and throaty. Great looking kit, by the way. Cheers!

I have no idea what (if anything) he'll use from that mic; he just said he's gotten good results with it. I really wish I'd taken a picture of it - it was placed in the center of the floor with velvet ropes around it, like it was a VIP mic or something, lol.

Realistically, all I'll likely hear is the final product.

One of the guitarists just sent me this. If you squint real hard, you can see the VIP microphone, haha.

(50-75' away was likely inaccurate on my part - looks more like 25-30-ish feet away from this angle.)
