After Bellson, the rest are all in the same group. Bellson had inhuman chops and musicality but to be fair to all, they are in in the Master Class and the loss of any one is a major loss for jazz.

I recall reading that Webb "could work up a roll with his right foot".

Also, I've been on a bit of a Roy Haynes kick lately, and discovered this album last night - just love the drums on this. I can see why they call Mr. Haynes "Snap Crackle and Pop". Also can't go wrong with anything Dave Holland plays bass on.

I remember it as that he was called "Snap Crackle", no "pop".

Vic Berton is a guy I wasn’t aware of until recently although I feel I must have heard him previously without knowing it. He is an important link between silent film, vaudeville, musical theatre and early jazz. On this tune note the cymbal solo near the end.

They all sound very similar to me ….

Keep listening! Eventually you will be able to recognize the great jazz drummers by their ride pattern, their fills and other attributes of their unique style.

My top 10 fluctuates and changes, but here are my choices, and why:
Tony Williams - he could do anything
Jo Jones - most accomplished soloist
Ari Hoenig - inventive, and a master tuner of the drums
Art Blakey - Mr. Press Roll
Eric Harland - versatile with a deft touch
Max Roach - could make complex figures sound easy, and created melodies in his solos
Steve Gadd - lays down the groove and then tweaks it
David Garibaldi - Who knew his funk patterns were so difficult to emulate?
Jimmy Cobb - the definitive jazz drummer
Brian Blade - knows exactly when to lead and when to follow. Good songwriter, too.
