Still using 30+ year 14” Sabian flat hats, works for all kinds of music. Flat med heavy bottom with three good size holes drilled midway, regular medium on top makes. The holes make them fast for the foot with a nice chick, sounds great open, light, or closed.
Flat hats were my first "real" hi hats and they were crisp indeed. But I would not use them for jazz if I still had them, too bright IMO. The brightest thing I would probably use would be vintage Avedis hats.

Maybe my ear, but the bottom being a medium heavy, seems to dampen the top hat, so to my ear they are not that bright.

Right now I’m playing some K light hats in 15”
1067g over 1392g, they’re good.

Not to infer I'm playing identifiable JAZZ ... but when I do attempt it, it's Paiste Masters 15 Dark Hats.

I’ve got some super thin 60s As as well. I also have some first gen 30th anniversary hats and some cymbal and gong holy grail hats. All 14s. My favorites are the A’s, but the holy grails are the most versatile.

Hey all!

Wondering what everyone's preferences are for hats, specifically for playing in the jazz idiom. I'm playing on some 60's A's currently, but thinking about grabbing another pair. Perhaps some 14" Paiste Masters Dark hats, or 14" K Cons. What does everyone else play? 14 vs 15? Etc, etc...

These here, but with the heavier one on top (the heavy one is still rather light). I prefer the added definition as the light cymbal on top can be a bit too mushy for my taste. I love them. :)
I also enjoy my old 14" Zanchis - a very strange beast. These are not mine but sound pretty similar:
