Not exactly related to this post except for the cardboard box angle, but I regularly use (new) pizza delivery boxes to practice and teach brushes. Some younger students can't afford drums yet or can't make too much noise in their house. The large boxes (14") work best for learning and then the smaller boxes (10") work well to transition to your snare drum. I have read that old time jam sessions often had a drummer use a suitcase or a table covered with a couple sheets of newspaper with brushes. I have found that the meat lover's pizza boxes sound the best...

My splash cymbal case...unfortunately my splashes are 10" however these fit, but only two at once....guess I'll have to eat more donuts....
The bottom side has a great brush sound as well....akin to a piccolo.....or a bop size box.
