I remember the first time I saw a John S. Pratt solo. It was the summer between jr. high and high school, and we were having our first summer lessons at the high school. I could play the more traditional rudimental solos and thought I was pretty good. The band director handed out the first solo in the book - Drum Corps on Parade? - and not only could I not play it, I couldn't even figure out some of the patterns. I put in a lot of work over that summer figuring those things out. They're still fun to play.
