I recently post about guitar player telling the drummer what to do it ended up breaking band among other reasons . If drummers did not Play there own soul on the kit music would sound pretty much like a drum machine ? We dont get drumming icons and New music styles . I watched a Petty interveiw from his early years and on . His drummer was responsible in part for the Petty sound and Tom was pissed when he found out his drummer was leaving Petty him self stated that the band was use to his style and sound and to replace that was a drag .

Tom foun out he was moon lighting and starting anouther band . If I remember he missed a gig or practice thats how he found out then let him go but Tom said he had so much to do with the sound of the band . You can go on line and see the interview , My point is Tom let him Drum

What if the drummer is screwing up the music? Nobody should be above a little constructive criticism. I know a great drummer who nobody wants to work with because he loses his mind if you dare make a suggestion.

I can't understand that mindset. We're all playing music together trying to make the whole better than the sum of all the parts.

I guess I am under qualified as a drummer , I dont know what is to screw up unless you are playing Brown Eyed Girl Like Neil Pert . If that be the case then the leader of the band is hiring the wrong drummer . So that becomes his fault , not the drummer . Bad Leader I stand as making that mistake wiyh my band , But I told the guitar players what kind of band I wanted , It ended up being a talent agency the 2 guitar player tried ro make it there band and then when that didnt work they tried to take my Base player with them . Maybe I should of put my right foot down sooner or up some ones !!!!! s . Or as 1 member said smash a cymal stand

Not to start a fire here but I have chosen to spend my life and career playing covers, a choice I made because I enjoy working and playing songs that are fun and or sound good. I learned early on that nobody really wants to hear “that thing from TARKUS” in the middle of a Sheryl Crow song. I think it is just common sense and incumbent on the Drummer to involve themselves in a situation where what they do is appreciated and appropriate.
I have had more than one “spirited discussion” with guitarists who can’t turn their amp up loud enough in the venues that we have been playing for 15 years to get “their” sound. My sole assertion is that you have the wrong amp. Oddly, the same reasons I don’t bring Timpani and gongs to those pop gigs! If you know where your gigs are likely to be over the next 5 to 10 years (and it’s not the Metrodome) you should select an amplifier that works to your satisfaction in those environments. Clearly, heresy and unreasonable. I remember the 17 years of casino gigs where the guitarist was required to go “direct” from pedalboard to house, a bit of a necessary adjustment and all in a days’ work for us cabaret players.

Maybe the BL would rather not fire the drummer and likes them otherwise. All I’m saying is don’t be so sensitive where you think you can do no wrong and everyone else are idiots because they don’t play drums. Has nothing to do with the situation you were in with the hostile takeover.

I do find I play so much better when I am bringing “me” to the groove; however, when I’m playing originals or interpretations of a cover I try my utmost to be respectful to how the writer or band is flowing with it.



Sometimes they need me to put some spark into it and put my fingerprints all over the feel. Sometimes not. Sometimes I’ll experiment with a slight adjustment to the feel or bpm to see if it adds something, always politely saying afterwards: “Hey guys just want to point out the change I made to the feel/tempo, and it seemed ground the groove more/help the singer; what do you think?”



So I’m not put off by some suggestions, but micro-management I find frustrating. There was once where the suggestions were not at all how I play or approach a song. Every rehearsal I seemed to be getting more and more suggestions on how I should be playing my part. That was the beginning of the band dissolving.



Of course, I’m just doing this as a hobby. I would think the professionals here have a different take and bring something much more to the table. Broad talent and musicianship for starters, illuminated by a heavy dose of professionalism.

I find the drummer is often ignored because he is "just the drummer" when in fact we as musicians can have a lot of important musical input. I am not just the drummer; I am a musician and part of the whole band. This rings true because it has happened to me so often. One particular comes to mind when I was playing with a band, and they were working on Bob Seger's Blame it on Midnight. When it came to the "Woooo" part they had four vocals all using tremolo and it sounded horrible. I piped in and said it would sound a lot better if they could all hold the note steady. Well, you'd have thought I kicked a cow. Guitar player was adamant he could not hold a note steady that long. I said, "Will you please just try it?" Lo and behold, it sounded just about like the record. Everyone humbly admitted the drummer was right. I was vindicated.

I am a singing drummer , If I have to worry about playing to make the guitar player happy all the time my singing tend to drop off should I say my Groove . I think a singing drummer should get a little break , It takes some of the load off the rest of the band ?

I can do wrong nobody is that good , That is the point , If some think is better with some one else . Then dont waist every body time , after better part of 2 months these guys should leave not take my work away from me .

I am not , Furthermore My past bands I never sang no did harmony . I just tested the waters , I want this to work so much knowing this is my last time around . So happens one of the guitar players liked my singing and said I should sing more , So I put more time in and now I am doing 1/4 of the singing and plan on more so my drumming and singing is a bit of a challenge . The 2 new guitar players on board . I refuse to let this band end because of a singer .Nor a guitar player . A band should get along like to be together .

Unless you are the lead vocalist or songwriter …

You will not be looked to as band leader …

Even if you book the gigs , it won’t matter ..
