Although I play Ludwig drums, I'm also a Tama Hardware enthusiast and I'm 78 years young; I have two of these stands, one on each side of my bass. They hold my 10 and 12 toms on the fly over the bass drum plus each one holds a cymbal on a hideaway boom. They are strong enough to clamp on more booms if needed. NO, they are not Light Weights but I feel they are lighter than a comparable cymbal stand with a heavy clamp tom mount and they look nicer. With folded legs I carry both in a speaker stand bag.

I roll my Roc N Soc throne, snare stand, Iron Cobra Hi-Hat and three FT Legs in a Ahead medium roller case. NOW that thing IS heavy and I swing that up into my pickup. I'll admit I could use some help loading that. LOL

Started using Canopus Hybrid hardware, Booms, Snare stand and throne. Not the lightest but solid…time will tell on durability.

All Yamaha Crosstown for me. Some of the best drum $ I’ve ever spent. No concerns over the appearance of it.

Here it is in action yesterday.

I’ve switched to them. I’ve used lightweight stands from Gibraltar, Pearl, Tama, DW and Ludwig. These are my favorites.

Here’s a question I’ve wanted to ask for awhile. I gig and rehearse a couple of times a week and I always use my own kit. I’m also in my mid 60’s now and humping one large hardware case around is out of the question. So I use 3 hardware cases , 2 of which have wheels . Great in a car park or a hallway, not so much going up a fire escape….
I started off with DW 9000 series but got rid of it all because of the weight involved. I then got the 6000 series because they were lighter and I liked the vintage look. However I found them hard to place when setting up the kit especially with mic stands around the kit. I bought a DW 6000UL set and they were a disaster as I use big cymbals and have a some very heavy brass snares. So they went the journey and I’ve now got DW7000 series which I feel are sturdy but still a bit heavy with 2 snare stands and 4 cymbal stands etc in the mix.
Ive looked at the Yamaha Crosstown stuff and while it’s light and well made, I just don’t like the look.
I interested in what hardware other older guys use. I don’t think I’m in a minority wanting lighter weight , sturdy stands ? I’m positive if a company came up with the right stuff it would sell. Or maybe there is a company out there doing it?

Heavy duty- Strudy- double braced- = ROADIE. I have light weight Pearl/CB77 cymbal stands just as long as I have had double braced Tama stands. N.O.N.E. of them have ever failed. While I do not gig multiple times a week any more, and that can mean many more breaking down-set up- play-break down-haul -repeat... opportunities for the clamps to give up, threads to get cross threaded and plastic parts to break- replacing lightweight stuff is MUCH cheaper. Once you see what breaks- when you buy the stands- buy the little plastic parts, the threaded parts the rubber parts- have them handy ( well maybe not in the gig bag). I buy used at pawn shops. Cheaper and easy to get them to come off the price they want. Start offering at 1/3 the sticker price (likely at or above RETAIL for new).

The Yamaha CS-750 cymbal stands and CS-740 hi-hat work for me. Solid, nice chrome, pretty light.

The Ludwig Classic is pretty great stuff. The hi hat is sturdy, no sway and very comfortable.
The NEW snare basket on the flat base model is what they should have had in the first place. Also updated is the securing of the height adjustment on every stand.
The 2 level Aerodyne feet are genius.

I've also used DW 6000 stands since '09. I've used 22 & 24" cymbals that get crashed with no issues at all. Nothing but good things to say about this line with every stand.
I use these for shows because they have memory locks, and the tilters are super secure but easy to adjust in seconds. The legs also have two "tightening spots" for the legs, so you can place legs over/under each other.


The Tama Classic stands are light, but very sturdy, even with the smaller leg footprint. The snare and hat stands are very nice in this model line also. I have a few cymbal stands, the hi hat, and 2 snare stands.

I use Pearls BC150S with my kit. They are also very affordable and stable.

also use the Pearl BC150S along with Yamaha Crosstown SS, HHS and 2 CS. I also use a Small Keyboard bench as a throne. It folds up and hets strapped to my rolling hardware bag and it is way lignter and cheaper than a “throne”.

The Tama Classic is a possibility and next time I visit Shane at DCP I’m going to check them out. I remember when Peter Erskine was helping design them and he based it on the original Ludwig flat base stand. That’s all I need.

These stands are very sturdy, even with their smaller leg span. The angel bends in the legs really distribute the weight. A pretty neat design.
The wings nuts are comfortable, and the height adjustment stays in place.
The only thing I had to "change" was using a key screw, instead of the wing nut for the snare basket arm. The key screw allows the basket to fold flat, and the arm is set in place where you want it.

I ran the DW6000 hardware for years, love it. But as you mentioned, to get the stability the legs are bit long. And frankly the snare, HH and left cymbal stand had a lot of overlap. At the Chicago Drum Show this spring, I was able to see the A&F hardware in person.

It’s killer! I re-outfitted right then. It has the vintage look I want for my 50’s and 60’s Roundbadge kits, is very stable and doesn’t weigh a ton. The build quality is second to none. The nickel plating is flawless, and the metal they use isnt pot metal or garbage. Did I mention its lightweight! It wasn’t cheap, but my back and convenience of set up was worth it.

This solution may be a stretch, but it sure has made my schlepping life a lot easier the last few years. In this photo are two 20" rides and a 22". Frequently I'll use two 22"s on my right without issue. The four drums will fit in one bag that weighs 30 pounds. The rest of the kit (throne, sticks, stands, posts, base) all goes in one bag with wheels that is under 52 pounds. I have another boom I use when I want four cymbals. There's almost no legs on the floor, so plenty of room for mic stands, or amps on a crowded stage. Pearl makes some nice mid weight, double braced stands. Also, if you have the stands with the knurled metal rod top section that tucks into the tube to convert to a straight stand, leave those at home. I've found mine are 3-4 times as heavy as a regular tubular stand

I agree about the Tama stands, except the hi hat stand moves quite a bit. I know you love your brass snares and heavy cymbals, but you might want to look at switching to an aluminum snare and lighter cymbals. Also you might consider a vintage 3 ply kit. I recently bought a ‘57 WFL Club Date and not only does it sound amazing, but it is super light. That with lighter/less cymbals, Ludwig Supra and the Tama stands and reduced the weight of my gear substantially. Looking for a lighter weight throne base. My Ludwig throne weighs a ton. Look for Sonor Pro-Tec hardware from the late 80s. It’s scarce. Like Yamahas crosstown series but built about three times stronger. All aluminum. Gibraltar briefly made similar hardware at the time.

I use a mix of Sonor pro-tec that I’ve gathered over 25 years. Yamaha crosstown. Some single braced 90s Yamaha and Tama swingstar stands that are steel but light and sturdy.

I use a similar strategy: two, beefy, double-braced tom stands on which 3 cymbals are mounted via boom arms. Then I use single braced cymbal stands for the ride (sits low, don't really bash it) and anything else I bring to a gig. Yes, the two big tom stands are heavy, but I don't need to carry a bunch of cymbal stands, so overall weight is manageable.

Thanks. That’s good to know. I’d only use the cymbal stands. I love the look and functionality of the Buck Rogers snare stands and Gretsch Monster Hi Hat stand.

Anyone have a link for the spreadsheet or list of cymbal stands and their weights? We collectively put one together years ago. I'd love to see that again and expanded upon. For example, beyond just weight it would be nice to see consolidated information on how wide the foot print of each stand is. If I was a high end drum shop that carried all this hardware I'd put it together and make it available on my website (hint hint). It sure would inspire me to buy something - that's what I call good service.
