Back in April of this year, I received a really good offer on a brand new set of Ludwig Classic Maple Aged Exotics in Tamo Ash (sizes 22/13/16). I couldn't resist, and I was blown away when I received them, both by the quality of the drums and the internal/external veneers. These were extremely well-made drums, and I recently decided get my nerve up and go back to the proverbial well one more time. I held my breath, and thankfully Ludwig did not disappoint - I just took delivery of two new sets. The first is a Downbeat set (20/12/14) in Lacewood.

These Aged Exotics have a different ply layup than standard Classic maples: 10-ply vs the standard 7-ply. Obviously, 2 of them are the inner and outer veneer, but as to the rest of the difference, I just don't know. I can say that they are pretty thick: To my eye (no caliper here), they look to be 8mm-9mm. In Sonor-speak, that's considered a "heavy" shell. The bearing edges are smooth as glass, and the poly gloss is thick and lush. The veneers are supposedly sourced from a 30 year old private collection, according to Ludwig. Obviously, they took pride in making this limited series. I can say that my Tamo Ash set sounds absolutely superb, and I have no doubt that these will, too.

If you should find one of these for sale out in the wild, grab 'em. They rival (and in several ways surpass) the best of high end production drums out there. The quality and attention to detail is second to none.

I didn't want to spill the beans, but yep, Rob just took delivery of his stunning Pro Beat Plus set today as well. His Curly Blonde Maples are also second to none. These Ludwig drums are just superb in every way. Congrats, Rob, what a great birthday present!

Thank you, David! It certainly has been very exciting! Sharing pictures back and forth while opening boxes was a lot of fun. I am just so impressed with these drums. The quality of the build is astonishing. I have been a fan of this newer exotic Ludwig building for quite a few years, starting with a large Waterfall Bubinga Legacy Kit that I had built for me a few years back. I just can't describe in words the 3-D nature of this finish...it looks a mile deep. Finally, I have fallen in love with these gorgeous 10 ply thicker shells. They have more "kick" to their punch...kind of reminds me of the Sonor Heavy shells too. As David said, the edges are smooth as glass and perfectly flat (as seen on my stone countertops). I also want to mention how good Ludwig chrome plating is compared to so many other companies. Kudos to Ludwig for making these gorgeous drums...sheer perfection.
Finally, I want to thank David for bringing my attention to these offerings from Ludwig. I am so happy I jumped on this kit. I couldn't be happier.

Super beautiful sets.

I was looking at those sets on the Ludwig Reverb store. I was really interested in the Lacewood Downbeat set, but then it was gone. :D

I did however buy a Classic Maple Birdseye snare. I agree, these are all fantastic drums.

I just love your tubs. The picture with the top head off is mesmerizing! The Lacewood exotic veneer reminds me of the scales on a python!

Thanks brother, I know what you mean - everytime I look at them, I'm reminded of reptile skin!

The cool thing about the Lacewood is that it shifts in the light. Here's a good example:
