rsq911,

Which throw-off does it have?
If its a marching/parade snare, it should have a P-87.

Ugh- so frustrating I'm sure. Looking forward to pics :)
Day three of “out for delivery…”. They even stopped in front of the house and left nothing?!
Argh!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Just purchased a snare, no pics yet because it has not been delivered.

But here is the interesting theory….

In late 1969 through 1970, Ludwig only made three versions of a 10”x14” wooden drum:
1- double headed tom 6 large classic lugs
2- concert tom 8 small classic lugs
3- marching snare 8 small classic lugs, Mach lugs, or club date style
4- marching tenor with above lugs

This drum is 10”x14”, has 8 small classic lugs, throw off, butt plate, muffler above the badge, clear interior, original finish, and b/o badge without the trademark circled “R”.

There is a p1216 mount……. It is centered between the lugs, which for toms, Ludwig places it closer to the top, same distance on all toms from the bearing edge down.

So…….. is it a tom converted to a snare, or a snare converted to a tom?

I whole heartedly believe it “is” a marching snare with a mount added.
Found a 10X14 Ludwig maple/ poplar/mahogany shell in WMP, about $100, couple years ago. Drilled for 8 Club Date lugs, the shell was a marcher, shallow snare bed, round over edges, 3ply, rerings, clear maple, a perfect match for my Ludwig '71 Super beats 24/13/16/18. My Supra needed a option, so I cut 3 and 1/2 inches out of the middle of the 10/14 , glued the 2 halves back together and Voila, a 6 1/2 inch snare. Covered it with quarter sawn oak veneer to match the set, drilled it for 10 flat back Imperial lugs, and top hole for P85. Or,

Very cool- and very rare drum.

Have you even heard a rumor of any Psychedelic Red marching drums existing? You can never say never in the vintage drum world.....

Was it hard to find Imperials without the bead notch?

Mod orange looks more or less orange from a distance so it could fill the bill for a school that had orange as one of their colors (my school colors were orange and black but we had chrome marching drums). Not sure what color Psychedelic Red could pass for. It looks just kind of dark when you get back far enough with no one color predominating (usually).

Of course it's entirely possible that some young late 60's band director thought the psychedelic was the way to go, so who knows? I'd guess they'd be uncommon.

After years of us harping about it around here Ludwig finally brought back the notchless Imperial. For some inexplicable reason they used it on drums they called Club Dates. I mean I get why they did it because of the center lug design but why saddle your premium lug with a "lower end" name. but too late. Anyway, same bolt pattern as the bowties or the Ludwig tube lugs. I swapped these out a couple years back.

Lol…nothing cheap about Club Dates. Taken one out to a club lately? Will easily cost over a hundy! ;)

I have seen one. It was on eBay way way back, kept a photo of it, and it was a 10x14 super sensitive!

Here are some photos. I do have an original late 60’s Ludwig Drum Corp head that is going on it, and a NOS set of wires. Hoarding pays off!!!!
The badge, serial number, and lack of the “R” trademark point this to a 1969.
