Hi everyone!

Snow is starting to suck and I do not want to shovel anymore lol!

Having said that, do you try different set ups with multiple toms?

For example: Billy Cobham, Myron Grombacher, Jimmy Chamberlain.

On one of my kits (8, 10, 12, 14, 20), instead of going 8-10-12-14, I tried 8-12-10-14.
It does get one to think a bit, and the 8-12 and 10-14 interval works musically. Or you can just smack a drum lol!
Thoughts?

I've tried it a few times; I'm not opposed to it, but didn't really make me more creative. I was just as boring as I'd been before.

Now, taking most of the toms and cymbals away, that was a different thing.

cause won't can't get on with the 10 as first tom
i know some do but not me-> on this my particular set
i kinda like the variation in melody tone too
it's anti-gadda-da-vida.

or basically a 4 piece with the 10 as an accessory ornament drum.
yes I've thought of 12,10, 8
going up the scale, like a piano.
but I haven't the time

you notice when Billy Cobham does it
his center two are descending
his far left is lo, his far right hi
like
15 12 13 8

A bit like the above, I tried a 13-10-16 setup recently, to have the 13 where it used to be, yet use three tom pitches.

another level to this game is to make one of the toms a concert tom...
Though most of my kits aren't rigged for 2 up....I like a timbale in the 2nd mounted position.

There are two ways to look at his tom sequence (excluding the 8 which he has recently positioned physically outside the main sequence). If you look at the entire thing like a keyboard, going low-high L-R, only the 13 & 14 are flipped (15-13-14-12-10). If you look at the toms in two sets moving away from the center snare to the outsides of the kit, then as you say, the pitch goes down moving to the left (13 to 15) and up moving to the right (14 to 12 to 10). With his ride surfaces (hi-hat, ride and china) all low and to the left out of the way of all the toms, it's a very ergonomic and clean set up for someone who plays left hand lead like him.
