I had one and asked John Aldridge if he would engrave it and he politely declined . He mentioned there were too many problems engraving chrome plated drums because the plating was much thicker than the black nickel costing of the black beauties . He said the chrome had a tendency to flake off when being engraved .

That is totally believable. And that is also why I love chrome-plated brass snares so much - they will keep that plating on there forever, and stand up to tons of abuse. I've seen photos of Ludwig COB snares on eBay where the plating looked almost new, and I've also seen COB faucet handles that were 60 years old with no flaking whatsoever.
