very recently, to the point of being noticeable to my bandmates and audience members who have seen us play several times. I'm not bragging -- I'm not a great drummer by any means -- but it's the extent of the improvement (and how noticeable it is to me and must be to others) that surprises me.

The reason? I've lost 2 stone (30 lbs), am working on losing more, and am exercising hard and often. The effect on my mediocre drumming is very surprising, even if it should not be. I don't feel like I was significantly unhealthy before, but wow. The need for physical health in drumming is a well-travelled topic already. But I thought I would share this to confirm it helps, and how much!

Want to improve? Don't practice - just start lifting weights! LOL.

When I started drumming my first teacher was Bob Levey, Stan's son-and and excellent drummer in his own right. He was working in a gym at the time and he was a great proponent of exercise, running, and weight lifting as a way to improve one's drumming.

Thirty pounds is no joke, and you mentioned lifting weights to do it. If you lost thirty pounds while building muscles, you actually lost even more body fat than you think. And if you added muscle mass and lost a significant amount of fat, your appearance has also improved. And so your confidence should also be improved, which cannot hurt your performances. Well done!!
