I got married two weekends ago! The wedding was incredible, easily the best day of my life.

For those who don't know, some weddings will feature two cakes. One is THE wedding cake, pretty, white and tall, the other is a groom's cake which is usually personalized and fun. For my groom's cake I wanetd a John Bonham bass drum. We talked at length with the baker about how she would accomplish this and I sent her a half dozen photos of Bonham's green sparkle kick for reference. She got the T-rods right, she got the lugs (almost) right, she got the green sparkle right, she got the Ludwig logo right, she got the INLAY on the bass hoops right... details I didn't expect her to pay so much attention to but which I was blown away with, and then... she got the Bonham rings wrong.

I hope one day I'm able to look back on this and laugh, but right now I can only groan.

It wasn't all bad, though. I did get to marry the love of my life. :)

That is still a cool cake. Years ago, my girlfriend had a birthday cake made for me as a Gretsch snare drum - it was amazingly close! The decorator even got the Gretsch logo correct.
I love how the green sparkle looks period-correct.

Very cool! My groom's cake was modeled after a red sparkle Gretsch snare of mine. The sticks and drum key are real, I can't remember if anything else was inedible (looks like real lugs). Anyway, it was so realistic that nobody was eating it at first because they didn't realize it was a cake!
Congratulations newlywed! We just hit two years!

I've been married since 1980 and had never seen - or heard of - a groom's cake.

Lucky for me that I didn't know anything about them. Given the culture of that time and my life, mine could have been shaped like a bong.

When it comes to cake, taste matters over everything else.

Also, am I the only one who looks at the Bonham rings and sees a chubby little tweety bird?
