Finally, my wife has agreed to share the laundry room and drum restoration can make the next step here! Much easier work than abusing the kitchen table.

Starting with a decent clean up of a 1970s Sonor D453. If you have disassembled more high-grade Sonor drums, you will be surprised by the D453s simplicity.

The strainer is very simple constructed and lug screws are supported by three (!) spacer discs each. Nevertheless the plating is of good quality and comes up very nice after cleaning.

That looks like an Imperial lug replica.

As far I know, D453s came with lower-end Sonor kits (Swinger for example). They had 8 lugs and normally should n o t have a seamless ferromanganese shell. Mine has one but Sonor has always been good for a surprise. The D454s were part of higher-end kits (Champion, Super Champion) and usually had 10 lugs and a seamless shell and a more sophisticated strainer.

The D453 for me has a much more interesting and versatile sound than the D454. Curiously I seem to be outnumbered with this opinion. While the D454 is steadily compared against Supras and other "legendary" vintage snares, the D453 is just regarded as Sonor`s low-end steel snare.

I have read somewhere that Sonor introduced imperial style lugs on some snare models during the 1930s. I could not verify this yet.

The Sonor D453 cleaning is complete. This snare sounds nice and I like it much more than the D454.
At some point, I decided to remove the sticker badge fragments. I will sell it and put it on the sale-forum.
