My dad passed away recently and he left me a rare gold Ludwig snaredrum. He talked about it all the time and was so proud. He got it as a gift from his manager in Kiel in -64.
But it was made in ‘59-‘62 he said and there were only a few made…
Ss supra gold plated
Now how can I “prove” that??
Best regards
Z

According to this account, Ludwig made 5 gold-plated (brass shells) SS snares in the early 60's. The drums were for high-profile players as Bobby Christian, George Gaber, Dick Schory, Joe Morello and Ringo Starr.

What else can you tell us about it?
Can’t find any numbers or name, but I haven’t taking it apart completely either. I dont dare. Only a badge, the old one I think. It has some bruises and were and tare and the snare is not the original.I will see if I can find it…

Yeah let me get this straight.

You don’t dare take it apart completely and then share a picture with it taken apart completely.

Now why am I confused? <grin>

I’m glad you could find it. I think it was in the cupboard next to the tea cups.

So if there were only 5 made there’s a good chance there would be no serial numbers right / wrong ? If that’s the case it would be hard to figure out which one it went too ….. unless one of them is your Father then you’d probably want to have a plexi glass case of some sort made up , and insure it lol . Or could be he knew one of them but would one of them gift a gold plated gift from Ludwig that was like new at the time to him ? Well if that’s one of the five you have something for sure . Listen to what the others are saying and handle it with kid gloves and don’t mess with it .

I opend one side and not the other, looking for numbers or a inscription.
It was my own guess that the snare wasn’t originall. I don’t know for sure.

My dad always sad that this drum was made before they started with the serial number’s. Only know he got it as a gift from his manager. And I think his name was Manfred… got no surname.
