Nitro lacquer over oil?

I am considering this on a guitar build. Yes, we’re discussing building drums, but I am considering this on a future raw drum build.

I have seen this done with scratch Les Paul builds because you can get the figure built up without having to do lots of dye sand back. Of course I have been sanding back a lot of built up oil on my Tele build. I really think that this build needs to go to the next level.

So has anyone lacquered over oil? Any input?

It depends on which oil you used. It might fish-eye the lacquer. The sure way would be to do an undercoat of shellac and then lacquer over it.

I used Tru Oil, which is a prepared boiled Linseed oil. So a few coats of old school shellac, then nitro?

Yep. Shellac will dry over the top of motor oil
