Options for a marching snare? Cut or convert?

So I have my old 15x12 Rogers dynasonic marching snare that I have no practical application for and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. In my younger days I took off the dynaframe and threw it away stupidly so now it's basically just an old marching snare. It seems like it's sacrilege to cut an old drum but it seems some people have done that before. Theoretically I could get a 15x6.5 and a 15x5 snare from the cut down, right?

OR I could maybe convert to a floor tom?

OR sell it.

What would you guys do? What should I be considering for each option (e.g.: any probs I could encounter on a cut down, etc...)? Does anyone have pics of a cut down marching snare or suggestions?

It is a dynasonic I would leave it be, sale it make good money and buy what you are after with the dyna money.?
I tried to sell a couple years ago on CL and the interested person told me it was worthless without the frame even though it was a vintage drum. It definitely kills the value, but I kinda just held on to it for sentimental reasons if it was not really a "Dynasonic" anymore, sans frame. Was that just a bargaining tactic? I thought I'd just keep an eye out for a frame on Ebay, but the 15" frames never show up.

I'd make a Ballad Snare out of it.
This was my everything snare for a long time, though my rock band did not do ballads. Lol. It was in the trenches with me forever. It's like having an old warhorse out to pasture. Or like Bruce Willis in RED. Retired but extremely dangerous. This is why it's so hard to get rid of drums. Argh. Thanks for the input.

Take a look at this one on ebay now. it does have the snare frame, but still?

well, depends...would YOU use it as a cut down snare? use as a converted floor tom? If you wouldnt use it then sell it. I think I have a 15 Rogers frame with gut but have no reason to part with it and dont know what price they would command if much at all. Did this have coiled wires or gut on the frame? (PS: I would have said that never had the frame...I wouldnt admit to throwing it out! :violent1: )

I actually don't remember if it was gut or coiled. That same seller from vintagemoore2k link above has the exact snare in silver wrap and his cage is gut, so I might assume it was gut. You have an orphan 15" dynasonic frame? If so...(wheels turning in my head)

I got the drum in my young, less smart days and all I knew was the dyna frame was hitting the snare basket and putting the snare at an uncomfortable angle. So I took it off and I was ignorant to what it was (mid 90s, dial up days/no internet access). Every time I look at it I face palm myself and apologize to the drum gods. my atonement is living with the embarrassment, a scarlet letter. A big R on my chest for all to see.

I've sold complete marching Dynas (with frame and guts) for $500+. This one, without the frame, is probably still in the $150-200 range, maybe more if the wrap and hardware are both clean and you find the right buyer who knows where he can locate the frame.

In other words, it's probably worth more in its current state than it would ever be if you cut it down.

Yea I think CJ is right on this one, something about saying it used to be?? just dont cut it, im not a fan of basement custom drums, not to say I dont like a good idea.

Ok. I've taken cutting out of the equation. I'll hopefully come across a Dyna frame one day and restore it or convert to a FT like shuffle recommended and make a sparkly Rogers-Frankenstein bop kit.

So hard to say I'd sell, but that's final option, I think.

I appreciate the help guys.

Since it was a Dynasonic it should not have snare beds so the conversion to a floor tom would be as easy as swapping heads. You might consider getting a basket for it so that you do not have to drill it. You might also consider leaving snares on it and turning it into the aforementioned ballad snare. A little snare buzz (like you will probably get without snare beds) with standard snare wires is part of the charm of a deep snare.
