Thanks Steech. I know there are a bunch of iconic bands way better, more sucessful and influential than we could ever dream of becoming. But I still appreciate the nodSalebarbes is an awesome Canadian band.
Paul is houseband drummer on a variety show on the french side of CBC TV where I’ve been to play a few times. Now talk about intimidating to set up my drums and sound check my meaner skills in front of such a freaking beast and legend…UZEB - Paul Brochu - also played with Gino Vanelli
Ryan is an amazing drummer. I first him in the late 90's when his then band 'God Awakens Petrified' played a show with the group I was with at the time (we ended up doing several more after that one, as well). I remember seeing his huge set and thinking "does he use all of it?". Yes, he sure did haha. He blew my mind. Usually drummers at that time with a set like that were trying to be Neil Peart rip offs, but not Ryan. His chops and creativity were very impressive. Years later when I learned he was playing with Devin, it was no surprise. It doesn't hurt that those two only live about an hour away from each other, too. Ryan is definitely a Canadian drummer who deserves a shout out.Devin Townsend -- and all the superlatives that go with his name -- and all the band' he's fronted.
This one is from The Devin Townsend Project's first album Ki. This is the full album played live and it is a stunning gig. He's got Ryan Van Poederooyen, Mike St. John and Dirk Verbeuren on drums at different points in the gig. If you haven;t heard this before and you like prog metal which is on the more introspective side - then this album is for you.
Current drummer (been with them for years now) is Clayton Hill. A bass player I work with a lot over the years grew up with him. Seems like a nice guy, solid drummer.Trooper - back in the day, they had various drummers including Ronnie Baran, Marc LaFrance and Tommy Stewart.
Uzeb was my first concert as a kid. That where I first learned that a bass could have six strings haha. I saw him play several times with UZEB in the 80's in small venues. He is a monster player for sure.Paul is houseband drummer on a variety show on the french side of CBC TV where I’ve been to play a few times. Sutherland is no slouch but Paul DeLong has a pretty good resume.Other Canadian drummers of note.
- Chris Sutherland - Kim Michell (personally, my favourite drummer that played with him), Sass Jordan, sessions, freelance, etc. Such a powerhouse - super solid. Has amazing chops, feel, etc. Hugely underrated, imo.
*must watch*
- Grant Taylor - The Salads, Dani Strong Band. First saw Grant play with The Salads many years ago at a small club. Amazing player with style and chops.
Others, off the top of my head:
- Jordan Pratt - Mystery Machine, Darkest of the Hillside Thickest
- Ian Browne - Matthew Good Band
- Skye Brooks - Veda Hille, Fond of Tigers, Co-Pilots (singer), Juno Award winner
- Dave Clark - Rheostatics
- Tyler Stewart - BNL
- Christian Tanna - I Mother Earth
- Sekou Lumumba - Big Wreck
- Al Cross - Big Sugar
So many more.
I like it when Alain Caron plays the piccolo bassUzeb was my first concert as a kid. That where I first learned that a bass could have six strings haha. Great show, amazing band.
