Hey Everyone,

Well, as promised, I’m neck deep in my annual AIDS/Lifecycle ride that I’ve been doing the 23 years. This years ride was cancelled but he’ll if I’m not out doing it anyway. Locally, meaning no camping, waiting in lines, no porta potties and so on and so on.

So, I’ve been riding daily my exact or more mileage I’d be doing on the actual ride.
So far, I’ve ridden the last two days: 84 miles and 110 yesterday. Today is a 63 miler with around 3,500’ of climbing. I’ve found I’m climbing wayyy more locally. Probably 20% more. I’m 13 mile in right now taking a Starbucks break. BTW, I’m riding solo with no support except for my loving wife who provides copious amounts of junk food (she’s giving me a break this week) and awesome massages at the end of the day.

Yesterday, I rode past the infamous Altamont Speedway. Here’s a few pics and I’ll be posting more as the days go on.

84+110+63!!! My @$$ hurts just reading that!
Ha! For me, Good shorts, leather saddle and a lot of miles in the saddle take care of any issues down there. Oh, and butt butter!!!

Right now, I’m 53 in taking a break at a local airport.

When you said "bike," I thought you meant "motorcycle." 547 miles on a bicycle? No way, Jose! Nope. Your ass must be made of high-carbon steel.

Not just no, either . . . . give me a motor, two-wheels and a foot-wide saddle, and maybe. A bicycle? My hat's off to 'ya, sir.

Dan, kudos to you for continuing your tradition and for your commitment to the AIDS ride. I wish I could donate, but all my work is gone and funds are tight.
Also, great Ritchey cap!

Sounds like a great ride, Dan.
The Horsey Hundred would have been last week here, but it was cancelled. I still rode it, more or less - a half-century two Saturdays ago, then a 25, a 30, then another 50 a few days later. Over 200 miles for the week, and that was a record for me.
When I ride, though, I don't get off the bike until I'm done. A 50-miler, around here, means lots of hills, and that makes for a tough ride without a break.

End of Day 3 was a 67 mile trip with 3,400’ of climbing. Beautiful day but it got hot at the end of the climb. The climb was a 10 mile climb with sketchy road surface. The descent was definitely an E ticket!
Tomorrow is a 90 mile ride in the Oakland Hills from my house.

Wow - and those Oakland area hills are STEEP. I sold my bike a week after I moved out here.

Great work!

Bumping Dan's thread, folks .......

This is a really worthwhile cause. You could do a lot worse than contribute a few bux in these contentious times ...... whatever you can afford. I know that times are tough!

To Dan: gonna look into the Selle An-atomica; I've been a Specialized Toupe user for many years, but don't know how my "fork" would hold up for days of Centuries.

Day 4 in the can. 92 miles with 6043’ of climbing. Beautiful day. I started strong but as the heat went up, the energy went down. Basically I hit the Oakland Hills and Berkeley. Also, I hit the half way point.

Wow. Thanks for posting this. I have to say your ride is inspiring. I decided about a month ago that I needed to do something to improve my health, and my life, and riding is something I enjoy but have not done much of lately. I'm not doing anything like you are doing. I struggle to do 20 miles at a time and then have to take the next day off to do some pushups, crunches and planks. But I'm slowly beginning to feel stronger. Hearing about your adventure is inspiring me to push on and keep at it. I'm 57 and will turn 58 next month. Keep posting your pics and commentary on your ride and know that you are inspriring others to push themselves. Ride on!

I will say one thing I am really missing are the people, the rest stops, the community... But, I had to ride. I realize now that working for this effort is a part of me.

Day 5 is done. 46 miles/3100’ of climbing
Today was the “recovery day”. So, I decided to do half of our local mountain. Of course I did. Also, today I was joined by a good friend who has done the real AIDS ride six times. He also lives at the foot of the mountain and he provided lunch after we came down. Awesome!

The last two days I am having friends and supporters ride with me as well. Tomorrow is an 88 mile ride and Saturday’s ride is 70.
