OT: Hobbies beyond the drums

I’m into competitive high power rifle shooting. Long range mostly, which is 800, 900, and 1000 yards. We shoot iron (metallic) sights prone with a sling. No scopes in the class I compete in. I’m part of a team that represents the United States in international competition. It’s like Olympic style 22 rifle shooting but with either a .223 or .308 bolt action single shot rifle.

With iron sights???…mad mad MAD respect!
Also reminds me that I have a ton of handloading to do.

Gardening and cooking. At this point in the summer it’s trying to keep up with all the tomatoes, green beans, peppers, squash, and okra. My tomatoes are fighting through some septoria leaf spot this year but I’m still getting multiple pounds a week. Gotta get the fall garden in soon!

Where did you get your starter and how long have you been keeping it?

I made my own starter. I’ve had it going about 4 years now. Most of what I learned about sourdough and a detailed instructions for making starter I got from this website:

Main hobby and my job is bicycles.

Just got back from France and riding quite a few of the historic climbs from the Tour de France in the Alps. Over 6 days I covered 310 miles and gained just under 50,000 feet of vertical. Two days back to back of over 10,000 feet. Hardest thing I’ve done to date. New found respect for the speed going uphill and the courage on the descents the pros possess.

That is beyond impressive! When I was younger I averaged 500 plus miles per month on my road bike with some early season altitude training in Colorado. But your Tour de France ride is epic. I would have run out of gears!

It’s been a good week!

Gardening is great!
We grow our own food since we became vegetarians.
We get all the tomatoes we need for a year and the last month we've been eating 90% home grown food - feels good in so many ways!

I fabricate a lot of stuff from metal and wood and built out our Sprinter myself over the past 3 years.

I also put in a ton of time building mountain bike trails. Very rewarding but very exhausting.

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned elsewhere (probably even in this thread) that old BMW motorcycles have been an important part of my life for a good 25 years now. Recently my son has become interested in riding and appreciates the beautiful simplicity of these old airheads. Recently we dragged this ‘71 R50/5 out of its cacoon and got it running after sitting for 12 years. He’s attended a MSF riding course and has been doing a little commuting on it. When he’s ready (and has a place to store it) I have a ‘78 R100RS that I’ve kept for him.

Little bit of this little bit of that

I've gotten into whiskey last few years trying to get my list up to 400 after a Wheel of Fortune contestant bragged that he had sampled over 400 Whiskey's, I think I'm up to 100 mostly bourbon and rye and a few Irish and even fewer Scotch. I'm limiting my list to bottles that I have bought not just sampled.

I do a little bit of woodworking but not very good at it, mostly just make things I need for around the house.

Thought I was going to get back into guns after buying a Walther (of course) 9mm a couple years ago, but it's not been out of the case yet. Just haven't found the time I guess.

A little bit of Native American beadwork, feather work, dance etc. Did it in scouts years ago and then a hobbyist group after High School that has Pow Wows in central Texas, but not much anymore....mostly I make a hat band about once a year. I can't seem to sit still long enough to work on them. I started one for a friend during covid thinking it would give me something to do and have yet to finish it.

Now that I'm retired I've back into R/C Airplanes. The hobby has changes a lot over the years and electric engines are the biggest thing now. I'm not impressed with electrics so moving along in to the new gasoline engines on the market now.
