I took Spanish in college. I didn’t care and didn't try ... it didn't stick.
Fast forward quite a few years ... I had to speak Russian in my last feature film (last month).
I seriously struggled with just a few sentences. Tough tough language.
Every take, I kept saying to myself ... "I miss Spanish"

I would suggest immersing yourself in movies and tv in whatever language your taking. For instance, just go to Netflix and put in "Italian movies" and just watch and listen. Over and over and you will start picking things up and your skills will improve. (Italian and French movies are pretty entertaining actually!)

The biggest drawback to learning a language is finding someone to communicate with to sharpen your skills and keep them sharp. You will forget it if you can't use it.
