There are two separate issues here. Stealerships being gross scumbags, and unrealistic expectations.

If a stealership quotes you a repair, do your homework. They're thieves in nice suits (which are stolen, if they had a chance). If you just give them the money, that means you're the problem.

For unrealistic expectations, if you need a car that never breaks and is cheap to fix if it does, Toyota makes Corollas and Camrys by the million, just for you. Their entire business model is literally built around making you happy. They exist for just this purpose.

Saying "I don't understand why people buy Audis - the parts are so expensive!" is like saying "I don't understand why people buy Sonor SQ2 kits - the hardware and add-ons are so expensive!". Astonishingly few of the drummers on earth "need" more than a Pearl Forum or Export with good heads - it's all "want", after a certain point.

We bought a GTI a few years back. We could have bought a Fit (because we both actually REALLY liked them, because they are great). On the long list of regrets on my headstone, "If Only I'd Bought A Practical Dependable Car That Was Really Pretty Boring" won't make the cut.

Either you're a Camry person or you aren't. Buy what works for you.

The thing I don't understand is people bitching about others buying a German/English-made car.


Let me ask you this question. How many Americans really "need" a $50K+ Ford F150 truck? Maybe less than 5% of the people who actually buy it. They buy it...get this....because they like it and are comfortable spending the money to buy one. To me, the Ford F150 is a complete waste of money. I'd rather spend less to buy a couple year old German-made car that I find fun to drive. Then I can use the "leftover" money (as opposed to paying $50K for a fully decked F150) to pay for any needed repairs the German car may need. But hey, if it makes someone else happy, go for it.

My parents had an '84 Audi 5000 Turbo Diesel in the late 80's. It was an awesome car....that is, until my mom put GAS in it! It killed the motor. My dad's mechanic assured him that for $3K, he could get a new engine and it would be fixed like new. My dad bit. The car was never the same and he ended up dumping it.

I have 3 German cars - yes they cost a lot, but they are safe, good quality and my lil' coupe is very exciting to drive, JDA! Find an independent reputable mechanic. I NEVER go to the dealer! I have two inde's - one for MB oil changes and interval service. My other guy is a German specialist for my baby......you figure you will drop $1K/year per car other than routine maintenance. It's just part of the deal. My wife's ML350 saved my life in a 30+mph head on collision. I walked away with a busted wrist and shoulder, the Dodge that cut me off was absolutely destroyed, and my wife's check engine light wasn't even on! The car was smashed and oddly, the AB didn't deploy. I could have driven it away but because the plastic bumper bent into the wheel well, I could barely remove it.

As for Audi's, the R8 is pretty sick. I drove a Q7 turbo diesel and almost bought it - very sweet, but settled for a bigger GL for wifey as we have 2 growing boys and their stuff - golf, bikes, skateboards, scooters, guitars, etc. The suspension is crappy (air bag shocks?) and one blows every year so it seems.

Lexus is ok, don't care for Infinity or Acura. Nothing American floats my boat, sadly (except the new Vette!), so German it is. Unfortunately, my wife wants to now go fully electric and I am resisting the urge as much as possible.......I need the window down, sunroof open, and a winding back road with my 6 speed girlfriend......

Why do a lot of people buy these German cars? Because of the name. It’s a status symbol.
I‘ll say it again, I drive German/English cars because they make fun to drive cars. If America or Japan or Korea made cars that matched my needs/wants and I enjoyed driving, I’d absolutely buy one. For example, I owned a Miata for 15 years and loved it.

I own a Honda Fit. I hate driving it, and I mean loathe it. However, it gets great gas mileage and my wife likes it. Personally, I could care less about the status of a car. It literally means nothing to me. If Hyundai made a car that I loved to drive, I’d buy it tomorrow.

Let's end or not get too mean.. I'll say one thing. Don't "blame" dealer ships. They have little books called Time Schedules, Sent to them by their respective brand's factory . Which says your 15,000 mile Service takes 3.5 hour. The dealership charges you 3.5 hour.
It sometimes takes the tech- well it used to in the old days- 1.5 or less. Just saying.

Yes on Parts but there again it's a factory price comes from Factory price books. just like the Service Time schedules are dictated by the respective factory.
Dealerships provide (besides the obvious) a livelihood for 10s of 1000s employees. It's a trade working there and a craft.
I know they will be gone or changed one day (maybe sooner rather than later with the advent of battery and silicone cars) but take it easy they employ thousands that multiplies thruout communities.
Yea I know. Old School.

My mechanic for my 1984 Mercedes 300TD was 84 when he passed. He worked at his fully owned garage until the age of 82. He was a certified Roll Royce and Mercedes Benz mechanic, but he could work on just about anything, although he avoided all the computer stuff.
I once was chatting with him while he was nonchalantly assembling a RR transmission from a pile of parts and gears.....from memory! Another time, he fixed an failing ignition relay for me by pulling the plastic cover off and working over the copper contacts with a pencil eraser for 5 minutes (the replaced part would have cost $100+). It still works 10 years later and he only charged me $15. I miss this old breed of mechanic.

During the lockdown last year I had plenty of time to research different cars . My 12 year old Honda had served me very well, but it was time for a replacement . I'll be forever grateful to have found Scotty Kilmer's site . He has much to say about repair costs in the German import world , none of it encouraging .

you have to wonder tho in countries and cities where say Audi is the popular standard brand (that the local librarian has driven all his or her life) when she or he takes it (her A4) into the garage..ah who am I kidding even the regular German citizen is driving a Japanese or South Korean car

What I mean is are they cheaper to service in their home country? I'd have to think maybe so..
Of Course on offer in home country is less complex versions than the ones they send us (that's always been the case) simpler engines are available in home countries. European imports always- never sent their base/base engines etc base trim levels etc..even today it's rare

And if somebody in service ever called me to say something like that ("we cannot replace the bulb, we have to replace the entire mechanism") I would just laugh at them and run to ebay and buy an OEM part!

Exactly. This weekend, my wife got into a scrape with her brand new car, busted an LED tail light. Not sure how much the dealer will want to replace it, but I'm not going to bother asking. My guess is full retail for the part plus labor. I will save hundreds by buying the part at a discount online and installing myself.

Yeah, Toyotas aren’t so cheap to fix either. They’re proud of their OEM parts.

I see nothing fun about the prospect of owning even the most outrageously exotic car imaginable (ie: Pagani?), just to spend all of its road time sitting in a traffic jam, which has become 24/7/365 around here.

PS: Give me a comfortable ergonomic seat, automatic transmission (no CVTs please), great A/C and a killer sound system and I’m happy.

My '85 Supra is plenty fun to drive. Once I hit the dirt, my '87 Pickup (or Hilux for some of you) is a blast, too.

I have a close friend here where I live that had has a 1 year old GMC Denali, the LED strip in the right side tail light fail. It was under warranty but he saw the tail light lens replacement part was over $800 for a tail light and that didn't include the labor. A tail light lens that is unserviceable to change lights out yourself, and to change a bulb you change the lens for over $800. Engineers for GM that thought that was a good idea ought to be drawn and quartered! American cars aren't any different really when it comes to cost. I have an older 2010 GMC Denali that I have had since new. It has been a great truck in everyway other than the fact that anything that has gone wrong with it that I can't fix myself is always over a $1,000... I have just excepted that fact that that is the way it is.
